FORT CARSON, Colo.- Friday, April 8, 2022, Command Sgt. Maj Jelani Edwards said farewell as he relinquished responsibility of Division Artillery, 4th Infantry Division on Founders Field, Fort Carson.

Edwards has been the DIVARTY command sergeant major since January 2020.

"I feel, honestly, truly lucky to have had an opportunity to have worked with you, Command Sgt. Maj Edwards," said Col. Damon Wells, commander, DIVARTY, 4th Inf. Div.

Before Edwards took the podium, he walked forward and shouted to the formation of field artillery Soldiers, "what's the sound of artillery?" They responded with a deafening "BOOM, BOOM!" showing unity amongst fellow Soldiers and their command sergeant major.

"I love each and every one of you Ivy gunners," Jelani said during his closing remarks on Friday. "Keep continuing to crush it!"

Throughout his tenure as the DIVARTY senior enlisted advisor, Edwards has made it his mission to be an inspirational leader.

"It has never about me," Edwards said. "It has always been about how I can serve the Division. How can I lead the right way as a servant leader and be the leader people can depend on."

Wells said that where Edwards chooses to spend his time is what makes him an independently unique leader.

"Sergeant major likes to clarify with other leaders the difference of being present and presence," said Wells. "Are you just there or does your presence add something to the event."

Edwards and Wells began saying, what is commonly known as Edwards' mantra, and those in attendance completed the mantra in unison during the ceremony.

"I like to say, don't be good – be great," said Edwards. "What stops you from being great? Don't come to work to be good; come to work to be great. Come to work every day and give 110% because, as your sergeant major, that is what I am going to give you every single day."

As the Soldiers marched off the field, friends and family lined up to say farewell to Edwards and his family one last time.

Edwards' next position is at the Mission Command Center of Excellence at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas.
