DENVER — A Combat Dive Team with 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne) took a plunge into the saltwater tanks at the Downtown Denver Aquarium in Denver, Colorado on Feb. 25, 2021. The dive team’s visit to the aquarium was part of a unique training event in which they got to swim with the sharks, while showcasing dive skills for an audience.

The aquarium dive was organized by 10th Group’s Unit Ministry Team as a combined training and bonding event for Soldiers and their families. The spouses and children of the divers got the chance to witness their Combat Divers in action and afterward, were able to enjoy the aquarium.

“This training event created opportunities for strengthening family relationships and promoted bonding amongst families and their Soldiers,” said the battalion Chaplain who coordinated the event. “It also enhanced esprit de corps amongst the dive team.”

The divers waved and played rock, paper, scissors with their families and aquarium visitors from inside the shark tank, which houses over 500 species of marine life. The Operators also collected shark teeth from inside the tank to gift to their children after the dive training was complete. Families and other spectators of the event were able to pose for pictures alongside the divers while they were suited up in equipment in the tank.

The children of the divers all squealed with excitement to see their fathers swimming with all the different types of fish and sharks.

“We’re glad to have the opportunity to allow our families to see us doing what we love,” said a Chief Combat Diver in 10th SFG(A). “It’s also good that the public is able to see Special Forces Teams in an informal environment.”

After the dive training, Operators joined their families on the other side of the tanks to enjoy the aquarium and watch the marine life they were just swimming alongside.

“It’s fun to actually see my husband working,” said a spouse of one of the 10th SFG(A) divers. “I’ve never actually seen him dive and neither have the kids.”

The Downtown Denver Aquarium dive is a yearly event held by the Unit Ministry Team.

While this was not the first event of its kind, the Chaplain says the Unit Ministry Team will continue to seek out opportunities to serve the Soldiers and their families of 10th Group.

The names of service members in Special Operations are not released publicly for security reasons based on the sensitivity of their missions.
