    NAVAL SUPPORT ACTIVITY HAMPTON ROADS, Va. — As a young Naval Officer, Mr. Joseph W. Murphy served as an appropriations committee liaison officer on the Staff of the Secretary of the Navy. While underway during his career, he served aboard the USS Iwo Jima (LPH 2), USS Ticonderoga (CG 47), USS Chosin (CG 65), and USS Arleigh Burke (DDG 51) and commanded the USS Gonzalez (DDG 66) and Destroyer Squadron Twenty-Eight.
    The Senior Executive Service (SES) ensures executive management of the United States Government is responsive to the needs, policies, and goals of the Nation to the highest quality. Murphy was selected for the Senior Executive Service in 2004, joining Fleet Marine Force, Atlantic (FMFLANT), Marine Corps Forces Command (MARFORCOM), Marine Forces Northern Command (MARFOR NORTHCOM) as executive director in May 2018, serving in various executive leadership positions.
    In just four years, Murphy led capabilities and resources integration, fleet readiness and training, as well as fleet installation and environmental readiness for FMFLANT, MARFORCOM, MARFOR NORTHCOM. He was awarded a certificate for his honorable government service of retirement from U.S. Marine Corps Lt. Gen. Michael E. Langley, the commanding general of FMFLANT, MARFORCOM, MARFOR NORTHCOM, Feb. 24, 2022.
