1st Brigade Combat Team Trains Leaders on Air Assault Operations

Story By Spc. Jeremy Stillwagner, 40th Public Affairs Detachment

FORT CAMPBELL, KY– Soldiers from 1st Brigade Combat Team ”Bastogne”, trained on every aspect of Air Assault operations starting on the 18th of January, 2022. The training included leadership from the Brigade level, all the way down to the company level.

“The purpose of the Air Assault Leader Certification Training is for two things. First, It is a program designed to familiarize newly assigned leaders with the execution techniques used to conduct company, battalion, and brigade level air assaults,” said Maj. Nathaniel Cave, the Brigade Air Officer for 1st Brigade. “The second purpose of the training is to serve as a mechanism that improves and sustains the perishable skills within our leaders.” The course was split into four phases, academics, planning exercises, tactical exercise, and the After Action Review.

“The academics in phase one focused on the Military Decision Making Process, in conjunction with the Air Assault Planning Process,” said Cave. The academics phase also involved Mission Command, Reconnaissance, attack aviation, call for fire procedures, fires, medical evacuation and casualty evacuation procedures, and sustainment. Each one was conducted in a 20 to 40 minute class.

In the second phase, the Soldiers planned an Air Assault mission. “For the phase two portion involving mission planning, we spent a lot of time focusing on the initial planning conference which is involved in the Air Assault Planning Process,” explained Cave.
Each Battalion conducted a breakout group session where they developed a combat power build. They were able to develop what they imagined their entire battalion would consist of if they were to air assault their entire battalion, and then they had to create a package tailored to the amount of aircraft available for the air assault mission. “From there we reviewed the steps moving forward and gave a class about the next steps of the air assault planning involving the air assault coordination.”

After the classroom portion completed, the Soldiers moved into their culminating event. “Phase three was a tactical exercise with troops,” Cave clarified. “The 1st Brigade leadership met in the brigade classroom at 0930 to go over the plan for the exercise, then moved out to Johnson Field to board the CH-47s.” The Soldiers were flown to the Bastogne Drop Zone where they received hands-on training. The leaders were able to practice sling loads, calling for fire, and loading casualties onto a UH-60 Blackhawk as an aid and litter team. They were then instructed to mark the points needed to establish a landing zone.”

When the final events were completed everyone moved back to the Brigade classroom where they began Phase four, the After Action Review.
“Once we arrived back to the classroom, we asked the participating leaders to give their feedback on how we can improve the training.” The 1st Brigade leadership team plans on taking the feedback, and incorporating it into the next iteration of the come before the next Division field exercise.
