HOPE MILLS, N.C. – Sailors can be associated with naval war ships at sea, conducting maritime and humanitarian missions around the world. The need to provide manpower for those ships on mission is ever-growing, but being stationed on a ship in not the only place Sailors end up.
For Aviation Ordnanceman 1st Class Shawn Thorpe, a native of Oxford, recruiting was the best option to support the Navy mission, finish his career and be close to family on shore.
“I never thought I would do more than four years, but all these years later I’m still here,” Thorpe said.
After 19 years of traveling the world and nearing military retirement eligibility, Thorpe wanted to be closer to his home and family. He decided to go on recruiting duty and is currently stationed at Navy Talent Acquisition Group (NTAG) Carolina as a Talent Scout.
“I joined with my best friend, after talking to him and a recruiter at a ball game,” said Thorpe.
For Thorpe, being closer to home, family and friends has allowed him to become more active in his community and join a non-profit organization, Drug-Free Coalition of Granville County, Inc., as a volunteer during his free time.
The organization provides education about healthy living and drug prevention to the youth and at-risk populations in his community. As part of the organization’s community outreach and involvement efforts, they host different events throughout the year to collect donations and provide services for those in need such as stew kitchens, Toys for Tots and clothing drives. Thorpe takes every chance he gets to volunteer his time with the organization to help and support such a cause for his hometown community.
Thorpe is known by the other recruiters in his office for always having a positive attitude and bringing a smile to everyone’s face.
“I hope to be a positive influence and mentor to the Sailors, future Sailors and prospects that I have an opportunity to encounter,” Thorpe said.
Recently, Thorpe has been able to find something he loves outside the Navy; real estate investing. He credits the Navy for giving him the ability to pursue his goals of purchasing multiple properties and wants to share the same opportunities with others through recruiting.
“I wanted to share the same opportunities that the Navy has afforded me throughout the years and help young people create and reach their goals,” Thorpe said. “A lot of people don’t even know what their options are and it’s great that I get to show them.”
Thorpe attributes his success to the perks of recruiting. Recruiting duty offers Sailors a chance to work in a recruiting station close to their home preference, incentive pay and the knowledge they are manning the Navy with future Sailors who will one day take their spot in the fleet.
