JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Fleet Readiness Center Southeast (FRCSE) has begun recruitment efforts for its Trades Apprenticeship Program, kicking off its fourth year and 2022 class.
The apprenticeship is a four-year combination work-study program that provides apprentices with a competitive wage while learning a journey-level trade.
During the last few decades, the push toward higher education has caused many young adults to struggle with the accumulation of debt incurred by college and living expenses.
Alternatively, FRCSE's Apprenticeship Program offers free tuition and fees along with an hourly wage and benefits, making the opportunity appealing to all types of candidates.
"We're looking forward to a new generation of employees that bring fresh ideas and perspectives, but also who feel strongly about serving their country," said FRCSE Commanding Officer Capt. Grady Duffey. "This program provides an opportunity to earn a salary while learning skills necessary to succeed in a lifelong career. Upon completion, our apprentices will earn a permanent position in the Federal workforce and directly support our complex Naval Aviation Enterprise."
The relationship between the 37 recruits selected and FRCSE is mutually beneficial. While apprentices feel the benefits in their pockets and in their futures, the command sees a decreasing median age of employees within its workforce.
"There is always a sense of excitement when we start recruiting our next group of apprentices, said Angello Evans, FRCSE's Apprentice Program Division Director. “It is a chance to meet some great people who are genuinely interested in a career and in serving a greater purpose, which starts with our mission to support the warfighter."
The program not only teaches hands-on trades to young adults, but also helps to maintain a flow of knowledge from generation to generation. Since many of the command’s supervisors and senior leaders started as apprentices, the program proves that a long, successful and lucrative career exists in blue-collar work.
"With each passing year, we are noticing stronger competition amongst the applicants because the secret is out on this great opportunity," he said. "While trade experience is not necessary to apply for the program, it does help."
The multipronged application process ends Monday, January 24, and requires a resume and college placement test scores at minimum, but Evans offered a bit more advice for those looking for a little inside knowledge.
"Make sure to read the requirements in the job announcement and on the flyer carefully, submit all required documents, and don't procrastinate! I cannot stress this enough," he continued. "Applicants must give themselves enough time to check over their application package and ask questions from our Human Resources personnel if help is needed."
For FRCSE, this program doesn’t just usher in a new group of bright-eyed recruits, but it also changes the face of industrial trade work, creating a more promising future for the command and the Naval Aviation Enterprise as a whole.
