WIESBADEN, GERMANY – The U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden and U.S. Army Europe & Africa teams, along with tenant units and partner agencies, all met on Dec. 8 at Clay Kaserne for the FY22 Installation Planning Board to discuss, collaborate and plan the next year’s installation priorities with stakeholders across the garrison. This meeting provides a forum to facilitate the alignment of resource decisions with strategic priorities, as well as review the progress made from last year.

“This is an important forum to get information and facilitate discussion,” said Mario Washington, USAG Wiesbaden garrison commander.

The annual planning meeting provides updates and a review on a variety of topics, projects and movements across the area, while also giving senior Army leaders and directors a chance to engage on any outlying details, as projects move into their next stages of work.

The USAG Wiesbaden, U.S. Army Europe & Africa, and Installation Management Command Directorate-Europe teams, were all involved to provide context to these projects.

“We’re here to discuss FY22 happenings and shape what FY23 & 24 look like, ensuring we get after the key priorities that we support,” said Tommy Mize, director of Installation Management Command Directorate-Europe.

Washington stressed that expectation management and feedback from these planning meetings and working groups in the past, directly impact the progress seen this last year across the garrison. One of the major projects benefiting from that feedback and engagement is the garrison’s Barracks Improvement Plan.

This year the garrison tackled multiple in-house projects, including renovated day rooms and kitchens, ensuring quality of life initiatives are moving forward as directed. Mid-range and long-range work will include bathroom and floor work and ultimately whole building renovations.

Shifts in how the garrison handles incoming personnel and their housing requirements also made progress this last year. Addressing the efforts the garrison has put towards onboarding accommodations and organization, Brig. Gen. Jed Schaertl, deputy commanding general of mobilization and reserve affairs at U.S. Army Europe & Africa, said “I feel like it’s a pleasure to live in this community with our Soldiers and families.”

Schaertl went on to emphasize and remind the group that people are the Army’s top priority and looking for ways to improve garrison services and the onboarding experience, is extremely important.

Looking forward, Washington reviewed future projects with the group and spoke of the imminent growth Wiesbaden should be preparing for. He highlighted how the garrison’s infrastructure and operations preparations in the past have enabled tenant units and agencies to assume work the moment they land here in Wiesbaden, ensuring the garrison can accommodate them properly.

The garrison also spotlighted other key priorities for FY22, including further refinements to its in-processing program, implementing energy and water efficiency projects and plans, as well as various beautification efforts across the garrison footprint. Numerous customer service and community outreach programs will also continue to receive dedicated reviews and attention to help improve the community’s quality of life in Wiesbaden overall.
