REDSTONE ARSENAL, Ala. – The U.S. Army Space and Missile Defense Command hosted a Civilian of the Year award ceremony to recognize the contributions of hard working and committed civilian employees within the command, Dec. 7.

The command makes it a priority to recognize the contributions of its civilian team members because they play essential roles in USASMDC’s mission, according to James Johnson, USASMDC’s deputy to the commanding general.

“This is a big deal and we put a lot of emphasis on the award program every year,” Johnson said. “While we value everyone in the command and their contributions, these individuals in the Civilian of the Year program have stood above their peers and have gone above and beyond to support our command and our Soldiers.”

This year, the command recognized three Civilians of the Year: Amanda Clark, Ronald Bailey and Cindy Ford.

Amanda Clark was selected for the Technical/Technical Management category. She received this award for her leadership in the research, development and design of new technology, leading to the development of more robust laser-weapons that will provide warfighters a distinct advantage on the battlefield.

Ronald Bailey was selected for the Professional/Technical Management category, through his work in the command’s public affairs office, leading efforts to communicate with the public in new and more effective ways. Bailey spearheaded the development of ‘High Ground’ podcast and his team’s videography efforts. Bailey also coordinated several high-profile Army astronaut engagements, and proposed the first-ever nationwide recruiting and public affairs event where U.S. Army astronaut Col. Andrew Morgan, while serving aboard the International Space Station, swore in approximately 1,000 new Army recruits from 150 locations across the nation.

Cindy Ford was selected for the Supporting Staff category through her work at the Space and Missile Defense School. She is responsible for all the student records and documentation for more than 4,000 Soldiers each year. She also revamped the school’s internal website, removing outdated and unnecessary documents and streamlining navigation tools to make the page more user-friendly. In addition, Ford digitized student and course records, reducing resources used to manage those documents, including paper and man-hours, by approximately 35%.

“We are very proud of each of the civilians who have earned this award and appreciate everything they do for the command,” Johnson said. “While this is a great achievement for our Civilians of the Year, the biggest winners are actually our Soldiers, because of the support they receive day in and day out from these individuals.”

In recognition of their service, Johnson presented each Civilian of the Year with a Department of the Army Civilian Service Commendation Medal and certificate, a three-star note, and the deputy to the commander’s and command sergeant major’s coins.

The criteria for the Civilian of the Year awards include superior service in support of the command and U.S. Army missions, goals and values, notable contributions to the efficiency and quality of support to Soldiers, demonstrated professionalism in his or her assigned duties, participation in civic and professional organizations, contributions to the community, and individual awards and recognition.

USASMDC’s three Civilians of the Year will be submitted as the command’s nominees for the 2021 Association of the United States Army’s Civilian Employee of Year Award, which will be awarded in spring 2022.
