U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Mark Bennett, the supply chief with Recruiting Station Harrisburg, won the Pennsylvania Steel League handgun annual tournament at the Lower Providence Rod & Gun Club in Eagleville, Pennsylvania, Nov. 20, 2021.
“My favorite thing about this tournament is the people,” said Bennett, a native of Ocala, Florida. “Not only have I been afforded the opportunity to meet new people, I have made new friends and found some really good competition to go against during this tournament. Everyone is friendly and more than willing to give tips or help wherever they can.”
Bennett finished first overall with a perfect score of 800 points in the Open Auto Division. The competition is broken down in five stages, with five targets in each stage. Each competitor shoots five times per stage, all against the clock. At minimum, competitors like Bennett will use a total of 125 rounds to complete the match.
The competition scoring is conducted this way to test which contestants are the quickest and most accurate. The participant who gains the most combined points during 14 matches wins the annual tournament.
“The Marine Corps has led me to competitive shooting,” said Bennett. “It has taught me the importance of weapons safety and being a responsible firearm owner.”
The Marine Corps requires each Marine to shoot on a rifle with a minimum passing score of 250. Marines also have the opportunity to qualify annually on a pistol range.
The Pennsylvania Steel League is currently made up of seven member clubs, offering 14 matches for the year. More than 100 contestants competed in the 14 matches for a shot to win some highly coveted prizes. This year, Bennett won two new Kimber handguns.
