U.S. Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Vanessa Hernandez, a Somerset, New Jersey, native, is Marine Corps Air Station New River’s Go-Getter of the month. Hernandez enlisted in the Marine Corps in July 2019 and is an airfield operations specialist with Headquarters and Headquarters Squadron.

Upon graduating from her military occupational specialty school, Hernandez realized the job as an airfield operations specialist brings its own set of challenges.

“It can be stressful at times, especially with the holidays coming up,” said Hernandez. “A lot of pilots want to get in their flight time hours and we have to get requests approved and pushed up.”

As an airfield operations specialist, Hernandez oversees the safety and support requirements for 19 pilots and five aircrew members as well as arrivals and departures for other tenant squadrons. Hernandez has also monitored flights for the commandant and sergeant major of the Marine Corps’ visits. “I’m honored to be recognized for my work ethic,” said Hernandez.

Gunnery Sgt. Cynthia Sosa, airfield chief with H&HS, stated that Hernandez is indispensable and a hard worker both as a Marine and a member of the community. “She has proven herself to be an invaluable asset to the airfield operations section,” said Sosa. “She displays professionalism and dedication in all areas both on and off duty.”

Not only does Hernandez demonstrate proficiency in her job field, she also shows a sense of care and understanding for those around her. “She’s selfless,” said Sosa. “She volunteers her time outside of the workplace and is very much a team player.”

Hernandez continues to strive for the best and to teach those around her. She hopes to become an instructor at the Marine Aviation Operation Specialist Course in Meridian, Mississippi, for her next duty station where she can continue to train the next generation of Marines in her field.

“She’s always looking to better herself and doesn't hesitate to ask questions,” said Sosa. “She is reliable and hardworking, and I'm lucky to have her as a Marine.”
