GROTON, Conn. – Beacon Point Homes, active duty housing, teamed up with Operation Homefront to provide the healthy ingredients for a traditional holiday meal to service members and families assigned to Naval Submarine Base (SUBASE) New London, Nov. 17.
This was the second year Beacon Point Homes hosted this event with Operation Homefront.
“We’re here with Operation Homefront for our Holiday Meals for Military program,” said Haylyn Lockyer, Operation Homefront Senior Program Coordinator. “Today we’re handing out to 125 service members a $25 gift card to Walmart, as well as $30 worth of nonperishables and two board games for families to enjoy the holiday season this year.”
Local businesses also participated and showed their support towards SUBASE New London. The businesses included Dime Bank Corporate and United Community and Family Services (UCFS) Healthcare.
“Military connections run deep here in Southeastern Connecticut,” said Nick Caplanson, President and CEO of Dime Bank Corporate. “We have a very high concentration of veterans and active members of the military, and that’s why it’s so important to us. This is our community and where we’re at, so that’s why we want to give back.”
Operation Homefront was founded in 2001 and the Holiday Meals for Military program started in 2010. Operation Homefront’s mission is to build strong, stable, and secure military families so they can thrive in the communities they have worked so hard to protect.
In the space of four hours, a dozen volunteers helped pass out meals to 125 service members assigned to SUBASE New London. The event was setup as a drive-thru as a COVID-19 mitigation. As a surprise for the children who came with their parents, Santa Claus made an appearance and gave out the provided presents.
