    Story by Lt.Cmdr. Robert Reinheimer

    Commander, Submarine Group Seven

YOKOSUKA, Japan -- A Tucson, Arizona native is currently serving in Yokosuka, Japan at Commander, Submarine Group 7 (CSG 7).

Culinary Specialist Submarine 2nd Class Christopher Verdi enlisted in the Navy in 2014. He joined the team at CSG 7 following a five-year tour aboard the Virginia-class, nuclear powered, fast-attack submarine USS Virginia (SSN 774).

Verdi works in CSG 7’s supply department, providing logistical support to all the submarines in the 5th and 7th Fleet areas of operation.

“Think of yourself like a submarine,” said Verdi. “You're pulling in to some foreign country. You’ve got to think about what you need. You're going to need food; you're going to need lodging; you're going to need supplies, parts, repair services. It’s like a racetrack, and we’re the pit crew. No matter what, we work to get them what they need.”

Verdi is proud of the work he is doing at CSG 7 and for the Navy. His work has broadened his perspective on life, and he sees some of his greatest accomplishments being making rank, completing two deployments while aboard USS Virginia, and becoming a victim advocate in the Navy’s Sexual Assault Prevention and Response (SAPR) program.

Helping others has always been a priority for Petty Officer Verdi. Before he joined the military, Verdi worked in emergency services for five years. He obtained his emergency medical technician certificate and went to the Illinois Fire Service Institute.

In his free time, Verdi likes to cook, experimenting with cuisines from different cultures. He also likes woodworking and wood burning, and to go antique hunting. His favorite thing to collect is Japanese glass buoys.

Verdi said he hopes to be selected for petty officer first class before he finishes his tour at CSG 7. After that he wants to be stationed in Hawaii for his next tour.
