The United Services Organizations (USO) Vice President Mr. Jeffrey Hill visited Soto Cano Air Base, Honduras, Nov 8 – 10 to conduct assessments to improve the quality of life for service members deployed to the region.
Mr. Hill was joined by Ms. Cecilia Fish, Regional Support Services manager and Ms. Veronica Marquez, Harbor Group Management vice-president of construction who toured the base with Army Support Activity leadership and Morale Welfare and Recreation (MWR) representatives.
USO is a nonprofit organization that focuses on providing morale and recreational services to U.S. military personnel and their families around the globe. The organization relies on donations from individuals, organizations, and corporations to support its worldwide programs.
As vice president, Hill is responsible for implementing high quality standards for the programs and services provided under the organization.
“We’ve been working with the leadership at the U.S. Southern Command and they’re very excited about what we are doing because we are getting to troops, military installations and smaller units that we haven’t served previously as well as we should have. It’s opened up a lot of doors and we’re very excited to get to these locations.”
During the visit, the team conducted assessments of MWR facilities and are now ready to develop a new building to provide services at Soto Cano. The visit also allowed the team to understand the layout of the base in order to support future projects and improve logistical capabilities for USO supplies around the area of operations.
“USO has a long, storied history of supporting U.S. service members world-wide, during peace and war. The leaders of Soto Cano Air Base are thrilled to have this opportunity to facilitate the USO’s efforts to establish their first site in the SOUTHCOM area of responsibility,” said U.S. Army Col. Carl Hennemann, ASA commander. “The USO’s efforts here at Soto Cano have already provided gaming, supplies, food, and other support items to our troops operating in the region.”
Soto Cano Air Base is a Honduran military installation that hosts approximately 500 U.S. service members from different military units, branches, and detachments throughout the year, including Joint Task Force-Bravo, the oldest standing Task Force in the U.S. military.
“People come here for a one-year unaccompanied hardship tour so this is the place where the USO should be to help service members maintain a positive outlook and upkeep their morale,” said Hill. “We’re going to try to increase and enhance our USO support down here and augment what the MWR folks are already doing.”
