JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-FORT SAM HOUSTON – (Nov. 3, 2021) Darrel Mercer, of San Antonio, a management analyst assigned to the Administrative Operations Directorate, Naval Medical Research Unit (NAMRU) San Antonio was recognized by NAMRU San Antonio Commanding Officer Capt. Gerald DeLong as the Fiscal Year 2021 Support Staff Civilian of the Half Year during an All Hands meeting held at the Carolyn D. Putnam Auditorium inside the Brooke Army Medical Center.

A retired Navy chief petty officer, Mercer has been employed by NAMRU San Antonio for three years.

According to Mercer, he owes all his success to being a part of the Navy family.

“I have served in the Navy for 23 years,” said Mercer who was last assigned as the administrative officer for Navy Talent Acquisition Group (NTAG) San Antonio. “After I retired, I wanted to continue serving and to be able to use my experience to further the Navy’s mission.”

As the command pay and personnel administrator, Mercer serves as the customer service link between all command military personnel and the Personnel Support Detachment on all pay, gain, and loss transactions.

Additionally, he is the Command Records Management program manager, for which he is responsible for administrative documents created by the command, and ensures all documents are properly managed from creation or receipt through final disposition.

According to Henry Buckley, Mercer’s supervisor, he always exhibits an exceptionally helpful attitude and makes customers feel welcomed by going above and beyond in assisting them with their needs.

NAMRU San Antonio is one of the leading research and development laboratories for the U.S. Navy under the Department of Defense and is one of eight subordinate research commands in the global network of laboratories operating under the Naval Medical Research Center in Silver Spring, Md.

Its mission is to conduct gap driven combat casualty care, craniofacial, and directed energy research to improve survival, operational readiness, and safety of DOD personnel engaged in routine and expeditionary operations.
