U.S. Army Lt. Col. Patrick Watson was promoted to colonel during a ceremony at Clay National Guard Center in Marietta, Georgia, Nov. 8, 2021. Watson, who graduated from Army War College earlier this year, serves as the director of public affairs for the Georgia Department of Defense.

Watson enlisted in the United States Army In 1990 as an army combat signaler. In 1993, he transitioned to the Georgia National Guard and was assigned to Charlie Company, 1st Battalion, 121st Infantry Regiment, in Gainesville, Georgia, where he served as a Bradley Fighting Vehicle gunner. In 1997, Watson graduated from the Georgia Military Institute’s Officer Candidate School class 36 and was commissioned a second lieutenant. Watson completed branch training in military intelligence and assigned as assistant battalion intelligence officer in the Albany-based Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion 121st Infantry Regiment.

Watson mobilized to Bosnia-Herzegovina with the 2-121 IN in March 2001 and returned from overseas deployment in October. He deployed with 48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team to Iraq from 2005 to 2006 and to Afghanistan from 2009 to 2010. In 2015 he led the 221st Military Intelligence Battalion on its deployment to the Central Command area of operations in support of Operation Inherent Resolve.

In addition to his combat deployments, Watson has served at home in a variety of positions ranging from commander of Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment, Joint Forces Headquarters, and deputy director of human resources for the Ga. DoD. In 2019, Watson became director of public affairs. In 2020, he completed his Lean Six Sigma Green Belt project which optimized the Georgia Army National Guard’s full-time staff acquisition process and won the praise of U.S. Army Maj. Gen. Tom Carden, Georgia’s Adjutant General.

“I now have full confidence that our operations are streamlined, and efficiencies are in place that allow new hired employees into the organization with minimum delays,” said Carden in 2020.

Carden also praised Watson during his promotion ceremony and oversaw the publication of the promotion order. U.S. Air Force Brig. Gen. Konata Crumbly, director of the joint staff of the Georgia National Guard, also spoke at the event and administered Watson’s oath of office. U.S. Army Lt. Col. Purvis Brown provided the invocation.

Among those offering congratulations were alumni from OCS Class 36 and Morehouse College, of which Watson was a 1998 graduate.
