Capt. Marissa Mazzola, licensed clinical social worker and commander, C. Company, Carl R. Darnall Army Medical Center, was awarded the 2020 Company Grade Army Social Worker of the Year award Nov. 3.
Mazzola was nominated for her work serving as a brigade behavioral health officer in the 1st Cavalry Division Sustainment Brigade where she provided direct, urgent and routine behavioral health care to 1,800 Soldiers as well as being the III Corps behavioral health representative for Congressional delegation visits following the death of a 1 Cav., Div., Soldier. Her report to senior leadership at the Pentagon helped spark policy changes on the management of at-risk patients after discharge from inpatient treatment centers, at Fort Hood.
Col. Jill Henderson, Army Social Work Consultant to the Army Surgeon General, presented the award to Mazzola in a ceremony at the hospital with her parents as special guests, many CRDAMC staff and other guests in attendance.
“It’s caring leaders, dedicated servants and people who make places great… and that’s what we celebrate her today within the “Great Place”,” said Henderson. “Today we want to celebrate all of social work and all of MEDCOM (Army Medical Command) by recognizing our company grade Army Officer of the Year, Capt. Mazzola.”
As Henderson’s comments about good leaders still echoed in the atrium, Mazzola accepted the award crediting many of the personnel in attendance for their leadership, mentorship and teamwork that helped her accomplish goals like this.
“I look around this room and I see many who have helped mold and shape me into the officer that I am today,” said Mazzola. “I’m committed to doing my best to pay this forward.”
