Yorktown, VA – Naval Weapons Station Yorktown’s Police Instructor, Steve McDonald and his wife Carol have been bringing a night of fright and fun to families on the Peninsula for twenty years.
“What started out quite small has grown quite large,” stated Carol McDonald. “We start planning and putting the Halloween event together in early September.”
Last year, the event was cancelled due to COVID-19, but they still handed out 300 pieces of candy via a shoot. This year’s event hosted more than 1500 people and guests traveled from as far away as Gloucester and Poquoson, Virginia.
Steve McDonald builds everything, sets up the special effects and designs the lighting while Carol comes up with the theme for the free Halloween event. The Newport News Police Department also joins the fun to engage with the community and hand out stickers to all the kids.
“It provides a safe event for our neighbors and military friends,” stated Steve McDonald, Naval Weapons Station Yorktown Police Instructor. “Over the years it has grown larger as more friends and family members join in on the fun.”
The McDonald’s small yard is filled with visual frights and interactive creatures that are scaretastic.
“We love when it all comes together on Halloween night and see and hear the delight in everyone who comes by,” stated Carol McDonald. “There are lots of ‘oohs’ and ‘aahs’, as well as, screams when one of our costumed characters surprise everyone.”
No bones about it Steve and Carol McDonald’s yard provides a spirited night of frights and entertainment for their neighbors and military families; it is without a doubt a screaming success!
