COLUMBIA, SC (October 19, 2021) – 21 Navy Talent Acquisition Group (NTAG) Carolina future
sailors pledged their Oath to serve and protect the United States of America. Rear Admiral
Jeffrey Scheidt administered the Oath on the steps of the South Carolina Capitol building. This
event was one of many that was held throughout Navy Week Columbia.
Many families were able to come out and witness the special moment of their loved ones
taking the oath to serve and protect. For some, it was family tradition.
“Both my grandpas were in the Navy and my older brother in currently in the Navy” said Future
Sailor (FS) Derek Niedbalec, a native of Algonquin, Illinois but recently moved to Lexington, SC.
FS Niedbalec, went on to say that he also has a lot of other family members serving in the
military that has influenced his decision to join as well.
“Having my parents there to witness me swearing in means a lot. They got to see my brother
swear in back in Chicago when he first join the Navy, so I am sure that seeing their other son
swear in meant a lot to them. I’m hoping to make them proud.
“A lot of people don’t ask or want to be in the fight, I am able and willing to step up and serve
my country” said FS Niedbalec.
The newly enlisted future sailors will soon ship to Recruit Training Command (RTC), Great Lakes,
IL., to complete eight weeks of naval bootcamp.
