The 351st Civil Affairs Command welcomed their incoming command sergeant major and bid farewell to their outgoing command sergeant major during a change of responsibility ceremony held at the command headquarters, Oct. 17, 2021.

The 351 CACOM Commanding General, Brig. Gen. Isaac Johnson, welcomed Command Sgt. Maj. Ryan T. Bodmer as the command’s new senior enlisted advisor by passing the colors to him, signifying the transfer of responsibility from the outgoing to the incoming command sergeant major.

Johnson praised the outgoing command sergeant major, Command Sgt. Maj. Russell B. Price, for his dedication and service as the 351 CACOM’s senior enlisted advisor as he leaves for new challenges with an assignment as the command sergeant major of the 335th Signal Command (Theater), headquartered in East Point, Georgia.

“I am proud of the team, the bench of noncommissioned officers you developed here,” said Johnson. “Your legacy lives on at the 351 Command, Your NCO’s have developed and grown to first sergeants, command sergeant majors of battalions, of brigades, and now a one star command.”

Johnson introduced Command Sgt. Maj. Bodmer, expressing his confidence in Bodmer’s abilities and what he brings to the 351 CACOM.
“CSM Bodmer has already been doing battle field circulations with me, getting out there and driving out top priorities as a team,” said Johnson. “He’s the right person, at the right time, at the right place.”

“We couldn’t be more blessed than to have one of our CSMs come up through the ranks, as previously he was the command sergeant major of the 364th CA Brigade.

“From your time as the interim CSM of the CACOM to your permanent appointment as CSM, I have benefitted from your counsel and our Soldiers continue to see what right looks like as you lead by example,” continued Johnson.

Bodmer, who enlisted in the Army in 1989 as a Military Police and later reclassified as a civil affairs specialist in 2002, rising through the ranks in the Army Reserve Civil Affairs community, took the podium and spoke to the Soldiers of the 351 CACOM.

“We have a history (in this command) of really doing a lot of great things. That begins and starts with all of you sitting here right now - individual readiness, Soldier readiness, and we get out of it everything else that we can,” said Bodmer in his acceptance speech.

"It is nothing short of an honor for me to have been selected to serve the Soldiers and Families of the 351st CACOM as their Command Sergeant Major,” Bodmer later added. “Through the years, I have been extremely fortunate to have served in multiple echelons of the command, and because of this, I know firsthand that we have some of the finest Soldiers and civilian staff in USACAPOC(A).”

After completion of the Civil Affairs Qualification Course at Fort Bragg, North Carolina in 2002, Bodmer was assigned as the B Co., 425th Civil Affairs Battalion First Sergeant and deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). Upon return from deployment, he was assigned to the 426th Civil Affairs Battalion (A) (SO) where he deployed twice as a Civil Affairs Team (CAT-A) Team Sergeant in support of Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) in Kunar Province, Afghanistan.

Bodmer held First Sergeant positions with the 492nd Civil Affairs Battalion, 425th Civil Affairs Battalion, and the 426 Civil Affairs Battalion before ascending to the Senior Operations/Intel Sergeant Major with the 351st Civil Affairs Command. He was selected and completed tenures as the Command Sergeant Major for the 426th Civil Affairs Battalion (A) (SO) and the 364th Civil Affairs Brigade. He was recently selected as the Command Sergeant Major for the 351st Civil Affairs Command, and has held the position as interim Command Sergeant Major.

“I look forward to carrying the Army traditions and professional culture of the command into the future,” stated Bodmer. “Ultimately, I am a Soldier who is looking forward to serving shoulder to shoulder with the Soldiers and families of the 351 CACOM - Born of Freedom!"

Representatives from the 351 CACOM attended the change of responsibility. The in-person attendee number was limited in accordance with COVID-19 safety measures. A virtual livestream of the ceremony was broadcast for Soldiers, family members, and friends who could not attend the ceremony.
