The Salzbachtal Bridge is scheduled to be demolished on Saturday, Nov. 6, 2021. On this page you will find information about the preparations for it as well as the blast day itself.

When will the Salzbachtal Bridge be demolished?

The bridge is scheduled to be blown up on Saturday, Nov. 6, 2021, around 12 noon. If it rains very heavily on this day or if it is so foggy that one cannot see the bridge, Sunday, Nov. 7 is planned as an alternative date. If the weather does not allow an explosion on that day either, Saturday, Nov. 13, and Sunday, Nov. 14, are planned as additional alternative dates.

How will the Salzbachtal Bridge be blown up?

The two 310-meter-long bridge sections are being brought down with 220 kilograms of explosives. The north bridge is to be blown up in such a way that it tilts away from the sewage treatment plant. The south bridge, on the other hand, is to be brought down vertically downwards about two seconds before the north bridge.

Where can I see the blast?

The city and the Autobahn GmbH will broadcast the demolition in a live stream. For safety reasons, there is no possibility to watch the demolition on site. There are no viewpoints and it is forbidden to approach the bridge on the day of the blast. Around the bridge, a safety zone of about 250 meters will be set up. No persons are allowed in that zone. The police will check this, among other things, with thermal imaging cameras.

Which areas need to be evacuated?

Around 140 residents living in the 250-metre safety zone will be evacuated. Theoretically possible damage to facilities and buildings is taken into account by extensive before/after preservation of evidence.

From when to when do residents have to leave the evacuation area?

Residents and others must leave the evacuation area in the morning on the day of the blast and can - after successful blasting - probably re-enter it in the late afternoon. The exact times will be announced. Affected households will receive a letter with all important information in before the blast date. In addition, loudspeaker announcements will draw attention to details of the evacuation.

Which roads are closed on the day of the blast?

The Autobahn A 66 will be closed at the Mainzer Straße junction, and the bypass will not be open on the day of the blast. Going via A 671, the journey ends at the Amöneburger Kreisel and continues via Kasteler Straße. Mainzer Straße is passable up to Angelika-Thiels-Straße and is diverted to the 2nd ring. In the surrounding residential areas, the Bernhard-May-Straße at the junction to Hüglerstraße, as well as the streets An der Hammermühle and Ferdinand-Knettenbrech-Weg at the level of the dog park are closed.

What still needs to be done before the blast date

Five Deutsche Bahn railway tracks have already been dismantled in the area of the construction project. Additionally, two to three meters of sand were piled up on top. A total of around 50,000 cubic meters of sand and soil are needed to protect the infrastructure underneath the bridge from the impact of the bridge debris.

    What happens after the blast?

Once the bridge is gone, everything should continue quickly. In the best case, Autobahn GmbH and Deutsche Bahn are planning to spend around six weeks in order to be able to release railway traffic as quickly as possible. The exact schedule for the construction of the south bridge will be revised by the contractual partners, the construction company and Autobahn GmbH, and all possibilities of acceleration will be explored. However, the overall completion of the new south and north bridges will be achieved faster than originally planned by 2026 due to the full closure of the A 66 until the opening of the south bridge.
