Outgoing Afghan evacuees said goodbye to their temporary home on Ramstein Air Base, Germany, Aug. 29, 2021, as they prepared to board a C-17 Globemaster III for their new home in the Republic of Kosovo.
With the American military withdrawal from Afghanistan, many Afghan partners and their families were airlifted to temporary housing on locations such as RAB as part of Operation Allies Refuge.
“It’s really part of the joint community pulling together to support this very important mission,” said Gen. Jeffrey Harrigian, U.S. Air Forces in Europe – Air Forces Africa commander. “Taking care of our Afghan families and those that have supported us is really an opportunity to demonstrate to them our commitment.”
Families waited in the terminal as an airman walked through the aisles passing candy to young children in return for smiles.
When General Harrigian walked through the doors to say goodbye to his temporary guests the environment became filled with excitement as small crowds formed asking for pictures.
“This has really been a team effort as we pull together multiple agencies to support this and we look forward to continuing our efforts to make sure we take care of these folks and their wonderful families,” Harrigian continued.
OAR has consisted of multi-lateral aid from several organizations across not only Ramstein but Europe and the United States. Airmen such communications specialists or dental technicians were now pulled to help set up temporary housing, prepare food, or organize augmentees and volunteers.
Many evacuees were moved to the United States as well, where they are housed on eight military bases across the country. The entire operation was not only performed by U.S. personnel but required help from regional allies and NATO.
