The Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers (FLETC) notes the announced theme for the 2021 National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM). October’s focus is “America’s Recovery: Powered by Inclusion.” The month raises awareness about disability employment issues, and celebrates the many and varied contributions of America's workers with disabilities with a feature spotlight.
If you really notice the theme for the month, “America’s Recovery: Powered by Inclusion”, it reflects exactly how Sarah Stratton, a Training Admissions Specialist at the FLETC Cheltenham Training Delivery Point, feels.
“I have never been or felt left out…I’ve been included in every facet of my job during my 11 years here in FLETC,” Stratton said. “Since my early days when I was working here during the summers from 2006-2009 as an intern, to now, it’s been great.”
In her current position, Stratton states that she takes care of the registration for all classes at Cheltenham, which also includes projections and allocations for those requalifying either for their quarterly or yearly firearms certifications.
Stratton handles registration for all the various agencies attending training at FLETC Cheltenham. “I handle the registration for those individuals coming for firearms training from different agencies around the country,” Stratton said. “The Metropolitan Police Department of DC is our biggest requalification customer. We even have firearms training for The Smithsonian Institution staff.”
Stratton gives credit to her father, Robert Stratton, for guiding her towards FLETC employment. “My father worked for the U. S. Park Police for over 20 years, then as Lead Instructor primarily for Driver Training at FLETC, and now he’s back as a WAE (When Actually Employed) FLETC instructor. His passion for law enforcement training inspires me also.”
The Bowie, Maryland native has sincere interests outside of her professional career. “I really enjoy a variety of things, but most enjoyments come to me in the form of photography, crafting and sewing, tinkering around with my 1948 Ford F1 pickup and spending time at the beach in Delaware”, Stratton said.
There are times when Stratton may find it difficult to be as mobile as the rest of her co-workers at Cheltenham, but that has never been a problem. “When those times arise where I can’t maneuver a situation, such as moving to another office or climbing steps, my co-workers always assist me, even sometimes without me asking them to,” Stratton said. “Like I said, they are here whenever I need help, whether I ask them or not. It’s wonderful.”
Stratton reflected on the month of disability awareness. “It nice that people with disabilities are being recognized and thought of,” Stratton began. “Personally, I don’t care to be in the spotlight, but I’m grateful for the support from my supervisors and co-workers, as I’m sure any person at FLETC feels. Disabled persons seeking employment may want to look at this and don’t knock it because of preconceived ideas. FLETC is a great place to work because they embrace everyone.”
