Sembach Air Base, Germany- Sailors, Soldiers, Airmen and their families with AFN Atlantic Regional Media Center celebrated the 246th birthday of the United States Navy at Sembach, Germ., Oct. 13, 2021. The event served as a chance to honor the rich Navy history and celebrate the men and women who have served their country.

The U.S Navy was established to protect national interest at sea and at seaports and defend national assets from piracy. The Continental Congress commissioned the Navy in order to intercept British supplies. Upon the end of the Revolutionary War, the Continental Navy was disbanded and commissioned as the U.S. Navy on Oct., 13, 1775. From the day of its inception, the Navy has defended the nation and was involved in Battle of Leyte Gulf, the largest, supposed maritime battle in human history, against the Japanese Navy in World War II.

“We may not be celebrating on a ship this year, but Navy tradition is still very much alive and well here at Sembach, Germany,” said Mass Communication Specialist Third Class Danilo Reynoso. “Where we are geographically located there is not as many sailors stationed in the area, so to see everyone come together to talk about the history, enjoy some cake and grow as a joint unit is really impactful.”

The Navy theme this year is “Resilient and Ready,” which speaks to the Navy’s history of rising above the most challenging crises, such as the loss of a ship or a global pandemic, and still maintain force lethality and preparedness.

“It’s nice to celebrate together again,” said Army Sergeant Christopher Brecht. “Last year due to the pandemic, things were a lot different, and I know we still have a new way of doing things and we aren’t back to the ‘norm,’ but last year this wouldn’t have even been a possibility.”
