    U.S. Navy Recruit Training Command

Meet AT1 Donald Leroy Goodman III! He is currently a #RecruitDivisionCommander at the #Navy ‘s only #BootCamp .

Goodman signed up to be an #AviationElectronicsTechnician out of #Lima #Ohio . He was 21, married, and had been a paramedic for three years.

“I don’t mean it in any dark way, you know, I just grew up a lot during that time, and I realized the world is small, right? My little city is… little, and I’m not going to be able to afford to travel if I don’t do something. I wanted to see the world, and my wife did too. That’s where the Navy came in.”

AT1’s first ship was USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76), where he became responsible for 21 workbenches. These stations contained equipment for troubleshooting aircraft components.

“I work on consolidated automated support system, and it was part of my job to make sure maintenance was being done. If a system went down, I had to quickly fix it to make sure we stayed mission ready.”

He found himself being one of the go-to technicians on board. He also found himself in parts of the world he didn’t even know he wanted to see.

“I got to see places like Thailand, and Hong Kong, I’ve gone to all these places and loved it. I absolutely loved the fact that I got to travel, and I haven’t spent any of my own money to get there.”

Goodman now trains recruits as an #RDC , at puts an emphasis on professional attitudes at work.

“Learn your job. I want you to be the subject matter expert for your job before anything else. Sometimes you’ll have to do stuff you don’t want to do, but that’s ok, because you’ll be a better Sailor and now you can lead others to do it. The less desired work is where your attitude can distinguish you.”

Goodman spends much of his free time focused on his family. His family includes a young son and daughter.

“We watch movies, play video games together. Photography, when I have time, that’s what I want to do. I’ve always been into art, and creating stuff. I would say I can’t draw or paint, but with photography I can do that using light, framing, and adjusting the setting.”

AT1 has developed his hobby to a professional level, but keeps his photography focused on personal content, mostly for himself, his kids, and other family members. He hopes to come back to it as a business after he retires from the Navy.

    #Hooyah AT1 Goodman III!
