ATLANTIC OCEAN — The Nimitz-Class aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman’s (CVN 75) Multi-Cultural Heritage Committee and the Hispanic Sailor Association (HSA) hosted a Hispanic Heritage Month themed celebration aboard on Oct. 5.
The event honored Hispanic men and women who have served or currently serving in the Navy.
Master Chief Logistics Specialist Marcos Perez, supply’s departmental leading chief petty officer and president of Truman’s HSA, spoke at the event about the recognition Hispanic Sailors have received since initially joining the Navy.
“Twenty-three years ago the diversity within the ranks in our service was not as great as it is today,” said Perez. “Today a Sailor who barely spoke English, who scored less than 40 on his ASVAB and attended a fast company in bootcamp because of the language barrier is now standing here in front of all of you.”
Before concluding the event with a cake cutting ceremony, Capt. Gavin Duff, Truman’s commanding officer, spoke on how delighted he was to host an in-person celebration like this onboard Truman in the height of Covid-19.
“It’s been a long time since we’ve gotten to do this type of thing,” said Duff. “For me, it’s absolutely critical that we get this opportunity to come together and celebrate these types of heritage months.”
National Hispanic Heritage month was first celebrated on Sept. 14, 1989, and since then has continued to commend and honor the brave Hispanic American service members who proudly serve their country.
Truman is operating in the Atlantic Ocean in support of naval operations to maintain maritime stability and security in order to ensure access, deter aggression and defend U.S., allied and partner interests.
