October marks the beginning of the Department of Defense’s official Domestic Violence Prevention Awareness Month, a time for honoring those who have suffered through domestic violence and providing education to prevent abuse from happening to anyone else.
In recognition of this year’s theme of “United to End Domestic Abuse”, the Family Advocacy Program and Violence Prevention Office have partnered with 51st Force Support Squadron to create their Month of Healthy Relationship Enhancement. This month will be full of events intended to foster healthy relationships, including a trivia night themed around healthy relationships on October 15th at the Enlisted Club as well as a couple’s night Sip and Craft event on October 23rd.
“Our goal is to promote prevention and highlight what healthy relationships look like,” said Capt. Amanda Mansour, 51st Operational Medical Readiness Squadron family advocacy officer. “It’s important for us to take a pause not just to highlight that domestic violence can happen to anyone, but also to promote healthy relationships and what they look like.”
The Family Advocacy Program and Violence Prevention Office will also be conducting a roundtable discussion on October 15th at the Mustang Center to talk about what healthy relationships look like, as well as learn the warning signs of domestic violence and what resources are available to help someone in need. The roundtable will provide an open forum for any questions or concerns someone might have about domestic violence that they may not want to voice anywhere else.
“One side of our program is prevention, but the other is acknowledging and eliminating maltreatment. We help victims of domestic violence and provide offender treatment for those who have engaged in domestic violence,” said Mansour.
The Family Advocacy Program will be present at each of this month’s events to further promote their message with resources and information. They will also be highlighting other organizations dedicated to assisting with domestic violence concerns located on base such as the Chaplains Corps or the Military and Family Life Counselors (MFLCs) as well as those found online, such as Military OneSource.
“We’ll be there at all these events to talk and remind people that we’re here for you”, said Mansour.
The month’s events are not just for couples, single Airmen are encouraged to bring a friend along to learn about healthy relationships for their next relationship.
“Come on out and get some resources for when you enter into your next relationship and make it a healthy one,” said Mansour
Military life can often be overwhelming and it is easy to let personal relationships suffer in the name of the Air Force, but the Family Advocacy Program is here to help.
“Life gets busy, life gets hectic, but having a healthy date night is really important for everybody,” said Mansour.
