FORT CARSON, Colo. — Soldiers of 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne) came together to participate in suicide awareness training, here, Sept. 28.

The Group Support Battalion Chaplain and Military Family Life Counselor hosted the four-hour Suicide Alertness For Everyone Tell Ask Listen KeepSafe training. SafeTALK is a program designed to prepare participants to recognize signs and connect a person with suicidal thoughts to intervention resources.

“SafeTALK is a way to create a place where we could talk about suicide and remove some of the stigma,” said Phillip Ludwing, GSB MFLC. “It’s a way to help people familiarize, feel comfortable and have a plan of action associated with people when they are feeling suicidal.”

Some of the training included having participants role-play through different scenarios, videos that illustrate the importance of suicide alertness, an open discussion, identifying signs of possible suicidal thoughts and walking through the steps of SafeTALK, Ludwing said.

In addition to the training provided, the Soldiers learned about various resources to assist in connecting people with thoughts of suicide to caregivers within the military and local community.

“We are training people who work in every area of the GSB,” said the GSB Chaplain. “When you have that connected layer of coverage, you have people and Soldiers engaging in the community who are alert to suicide risk.”

The GSB chaplain will be hosting the two-day Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training workshop Oct. 20-21 developed to provide a unique life-assisting intervention model to help caregivers support persons at risk.
If you or someone you know are having thoughts of suicide, please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline: 1-800-273-TALK(8255) available 24/7.
