JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO-RANDOLPH, Texas (AFNS) --
With the new school year underway, on-base schools in the Joint Base San Antonio area are taking strides to make sure the students are as ready for “Covid Safe learning” as possible.
While the previous school year offered both in-person and virtual attendance options, this year all school children are required to attend in-person for school days.
“We are extremely happy to see all of their smiling faces in person this year,” said Jason Kreinhop, an elementary teacher at Randolph Field Elementary, Joint Base San Antonio-Randolph, while receiving a high five from a passing student. “It’s just so much easier to engage with them when they are right here.”
This year, masks are highly encouraged to be worn by staff and students alike, but not mandated, as the state of Texas issued an executive order that states masks cannot be made mandatory after June 4th, 2021.
“I will wear a mask while I’m at school,” said Emily Cerny, a third-grade student at Randolph Field Elementary School. “It will help keep my family safer.”
The schools on base continue to implement other safety measures, such as frequent hand washing, social distancing and regular surface disinfection.
The new school year brings new challenges in addition to re-familiarizing the children with the in-person daily routines and reconnecting with friends from previous years. The children are older and more advanced academically. This means middle school and high school changes for some of the children.
“I’m nervous to start middle school,” admitted Jason Cerny, a 6th grader at Randolph Middle School. “I don’t know how I’ll like having to move from room to room. But at least my old friends will be there too!”
Both teachers and students are ready to take on the challenge of the new year and it’s quite apparent on their faces, even if they are wearing a mask.
