Raiders Bid Farewell to Upton; Welcome Moon

    HINESVILLE, GA, UNITED STATES

    08.12.2021

    Story by Sgt. Daniel Guerrero

1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division

The Soldiers of the 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team “Raider”, 3rd Infantry Division bid farewell to their commander, Col. Trent Upton, during a change of command ceremony Aug. 12, 2021, at Cashe Gardens, Ft. Stewart, Ga.

Upton has led the Raider the Soldiers for the past 26 months with devotion and dedication to them, their Families, and the mission. He commanded the Raiders through multiple complex mission sets including multiple gunnery tables, multi echelon training events, and deployed the Raiders to the Republic of South Korea, most of which were in the COVID-19 environment.

Upton reflected on when he was a cadet standing in formation during a brigade change of command on Fort Stewart.

“It was around 1330 in the afternoon, we were in full battle rattle with fixed bayonets, and I didn’t know what ‘Heat Cat 5’ meant, but I always remember that character-building event,” said Upton. “Cadet Upton’s goals were simple: Infantry Platoon Leader would be pretty cool. In a lifetime and an instant, Col. Upton steps off the field today.”

Upton thanked all of his past and present leaders and could not have been more proud of the Soldiers of the Raider Brigade.

“You have done everything that was asked and then some; shouldering more than your share of the load,” said Upton. “Any modicum of success that might be ascribed to me is really yours.“My name is Trent Upton, and I will forever be a Dogface Soldier.”

The Raider Soldiers and Families then welcomed Col. Pete Moon, and his wife Brianna, to the Raider Family. He was commissioned as an infantry officer from the United States Military Academy in 1998. Moon holds a master’s degrees in Strategic Studies from the Army War College, Public Policy, and Administration from Northwestern University. He also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from USMA.

“To the Raider Brigade Soldiers and Families, to say I am fired up to join our team is an understatement,” said Moon. “Brianna and I look forward to serving with you and I commit myself one hundred percent and then some to make this brigade successful and creating a positive climate. My name is Pete Moon and I finally get to be a Dog Face Soldier, Not fancy, just tough.”
