MOODY AIR FORCE BASE, Ga. --

Moody Air Force Base and Schneider Electric’s renewable energy infrastructure project received one of the Top Projects of the Year Award in the Environment + Energy Leader Awards program, July 20, 2021.

Saving the Department of Defense $700,000 annually and spanning across 2 million square feet and more than 60 buildings, the project consists of a solar panel farm, LED light installments, transformer replacements and more.

“This has been an on-going process since 2018,” said Elizabeth Herrmann, Moody Air Force Base energy manager. “And all of these updates make it so that we’re saving energy and money.”

The project uses renewable energy alternatives which offset a portion of the installation’s utility bill. It also enables the base to go partially off grid in the event of a disruption, keeping critical operations online to maintain safety and security. The collaboration falls in line with the Air Force’s Energy Vision to enhance mission assurance through energy assurance.

“This is a cost-effective solution that provides a roadmap for longer term saving opportunities,” said an Environment + Energy Leader Awards judge in a press release. “Newer, smarter and more resilient system controls will also improve the overall comfort and environment for Airmen while being fiscally responsible for taxpayers.”

Moody AFB’s partnerships with the local community continue to grow, leaving a positive impact for Airmen and the surrounding area.

“We are honored to have our energy savings performance contract acknowledged as a top project for energy management and sustainability,” Herrmann said. “This project will have lasting impacts on our mission capabilities, energy resilience and environmental impact for years to come. We hope our initiative can inspire other agencies looking to help address the nation’s broader energy challenges.”

The Environment + Energy Leader Awards program, now in its ninth year, allows unaffiliated judges to score entries based on rigorous criteria. Top products and projects were selected from across a variety of industries based on their success in providing significant sustainability and energy management results.
