All for children: local children enjoy Marines' new style storytelling in pandemic / 全ては子供達のために - 地元園児、海兵隊試行錯誤の読み聞かせ楽しむ

A line of colorful hats moved along an alley behind the school playground as children marched behind their teachers in a single line formation.

In the morning before Halloween, Oct. 30, 2020, 51 children, ages 4 and 5, from Kitatama Kindergarten, located next to Camps Foster and Lester, gathered at Jaagaru Community Center in Chatan to experience a new way to feel Halloween under the COVID-19 pandemic.

The children were about to have story time, but all they could see was a big white screen on the stage. There was no one in front of them with a book.
As the lights tuned off, a child said it looked like a movie (theater). The story time started. On the screen, a picture of a book was shown. Then they heard a voice reading the story. "English!" several children shouted.

When the voice in English stopped, a voice in Japanese repeated what was said. As soon as the pictures of the book on the screen disappeared, children saw three foreigners with hats, masks and costumes on the screen. Watching a storytelling video with a skit on DVD was the day's event, the new way to do a story time without worrying about the spread of COVID-19.

Hiroko Tomimura, community relations specialist for Camps Foster and Lester, realized that since the outbreak of COVID-19, the children have not been able to have story time with Marines like they used to. Her idea for a prerecorded story time became a realization when Marines helped her with the reading and acting. She planned to contact local schools, hoping they would like this idea and show it to the children.

"I am glad Jaagaru Community Center took this idea with the DVD in and showed it to children," said Tomimura. "After all, I made this for children."

The book selected was "Popcorn" by Frank Asch. At the climax of the story, popcorn popped and filled up the whole house, and only the performers’ hands could be seen waving for help behind a giant sheet of paper with popcorn drawn, children made commotion and shouted, "Explosion!"

They stared on the screen to find out what would happen next. When seeing all the popcorn was eaten by the characters, some said impossible.
"I would throw it away," a child replied when a teacher asked what he would do if that happened to his house after the video. Everyone in the hall burst into laughter.

At the end of the story, when more popcorn was given as a present to the main character, one child in the room exclaimed "oh my gosh" in English and gave rise to a storm of laugher in the whole room again.

"It was a success. It was really nice to see children smile and excited," Toru Tokuzato, district mayor of Jaagaru, who was one of the players in the skit, said with a big smile on his face.

"We never had Marines’ do story time in English like this for our children before, but I was surprised that children seem to understand it," Ayako Higa, vice principal of the Kitatama Kindergarten, expressed her surprise. "It will be great if we can have a live storytelling next time when COVID-19 settles."

　10月30日、ハロウィーン前日の朝、在沖海兵隊キャンプ・フォスター＆レスターに隣接する北谷町の謝苅公民館に北玉幼稚園の４歳と５歳の51人の園児たちが集まり、コロナ禍での新しいハロウィーンの楽しみ方を体験した。

　子供達のこの日の目的は読み聞かせだったが、その時間になっても、子供たちの前にあるものはステージ上の大きな白いスクリーンだけだった。 彼らの前に本を持っている人は誰もいなかった。

　電気が消えると、園児の一人が映画みたいだと言った。 読み聞かせが始まった。 画面には絵本の絵が映し出された。そして本を読む声が聞こえた。「英語だ！」数名の子供たちが叫んだ。

　英語が終わると、次は日本語だった。画面上の絵本が消えるとすぐに、子供たちは帽子やマスクや衣装を身に着けた３人の外国人が代わりに立っているのを見た。ＤＶＤで寸劇を交えた読み聞かせを鑑賞することがその日のイベントであり、新型コロナウイルスの感染を心配せずに読み聞かせを行う新しい方法だった。

　キャンプ・フォスター＆レスターの富村浩子渉外官は、新型コロナウイルス感染症発生以来、子供達が海兵隊員との読み聞かせの場を以前のように持っていないことに気が付いた。彼女の読み聞かせ寸劇動画のアイデアは、読み聞かせの際に、海兵隊員が寸劇をしてそれを録画した時に実現したが、富村渉外官は、地元の学校関係者に連絡を入れ、彼らがこのアイデアを受け入れ、動画を子供たちに見せてくれることを願った。

　「謝苅公民館がこのアイデアを受け入れてくれて、子供たちにＤＶＤを披露してくれて本当にうれしいです」と富村渉外官は言った。「私はこのＤＶＤを子供たちのために作ったので。」

　読み聞かせの本は、フランク・アッシュの「ポップコーン」だった。 ポップコーンが家全体を埋め尽くすというクライマックスに達したとき、画面上のボランティアの隊員らがポップコーンの絵が描かれた巨大な紙の後ろに隠れ、手を振って助けを求めたとき、子供たちは騒ぎ、「爆発した！」と口々に言った。

　彼らは次に何が起こるかを見極めるため画面を見つめた。全てのポップコーンが食べられたのを見ると、そんなことは無理だと言う園児もいた。

　読み聞かせの後で先生が園児の一人に自分の家でそれが起こったらどうするかと尋ねたとき、「捨てます」と、園児が答え、会場のみんなは大笑いした。

　物語の最後に、さらにポップコーンがお土産として主人公に与えられたとき、ある園児が英語で「オー、マイゴッシュ！」と言い、部屋全体がもう一度笑いに包まれた。

　海兵隊員と共に寸劇にも参加した謝苅区長の徳里徹さんは、「子供たちが笑顔で興奮しているのを見て、うまくいって本当に良かった」と満面の笑みで語った。

　「これまで海兵隊員の読み聞かせはありませんでしたが、子供たちが英語での読み聞かせを理解しているようで驚きました」と比嘉綾子副園長。「コロナが落ち着いたときには、生の読み聞かせができれば素晴らしいと思います」と次への期待を語った。
