NORTH LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas –76% of the U.S. states and territories, totaling over 400 competitors, have sent in their LOI confirming participation in the 2021 Winston P. Wilson (WPW) Rifle and Pistol Championship, as of July 14.

As a reminder, by July 28 States and Territories need to turn in their team member’s request for orders (RFO), to allow our finance team time to coordinate getting orders cut for all competitors.

The National Guard Marksmanship Training Center (NGMTC) has received a letter of intent (LOI) from 37 States and Territories including: Alabama, Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Delaware, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Puerto Rico, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virgin Islands (US), Virginia, Wisconsin, and Wyoming.

“Thank you to all the States and Territories who confirmed whether they were going to attend or not,” said Lt. Col. David Stapp, administrative officer, NGMTC. “Having this much participation is more than expected in light of COVID and despite the changes to the competition calendars.”

The event was announced, in April, and will be held concurrently with the Armed Forces Skill at Arms Meeting commonly referred to as AFSAM. The WPW Rifle and Pistol Championship is scheduled for Aug. 28- Sept. 2, 2021 at Robinson Maneuver Training Center (RMTC) North Little Rock, Ark.

“WPW is normally held in the spring,” said Stapp. “This change came as a result of a decision made in the spring by the Arkansas Adjutant General based on local COVID-19 guidance.”

The Official Match Programs are published and can be found on our website by clicking the ‘OMP & Results’ tab.’ There is a new RFO (request for orders) form published as well.

WPW specifics: Travel and registration will be Aug. 27 & 28. The matches will begin with the Special Zero match Aug. 28. The awards ceremony will be held Sept. 2. Return travel is scheduled for Sept. 3.

AFSAM specifics: The matches will begin with the Special Zero match Aug. 23. The overall awards ceremony will be held Sept. 3. Return travel is scheduled for Sept. 4.

Walk-ins to this event will not be allowed, except for EIC matches.

Teams include four firing members and one alternate firing member, or coach. The team captain, or coach, must forward a request for orders (RFO) form for each team member to the NGMTC mailbox no later than July 28, 2021.

The AFSAM and WPW competitions develop operational shooting and maneuvering skills at the entry and advanced levels, and recognizes superior skill at the highest level. During the event, Soldiers and Airmen compete in separate classes consisting of novice, open and international based on previous competition experience.

Ammunition is provided, and participants must bring their assigned unit firearms and unit optics.

Additionally, participants can earn Excellence in Competition (EIC) Marksmanship Badges and credit points toward their Distinguished Rifle and Pistol designations in the EIC Matches during the event. The prestigious EIC Badge takes precedence over standard qualification badges. Walk-ons will be allowed for EIC matches only and will require prior coordination with automated data processing section.

Competition events require running and other physical activities. Unit leaders should ensure that service members selected for participation are physically fit.
