The Geospatial and Signatures Intelligence Group at the National Air and Space Intelligence Center, Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio, welcomed their incoming commander during a change of command ceremony at the Wright-Patterson Club July 15 making this the second change of command for NASIC this week.
Colonel Steven L. Watts II assumed command of GS from outgoing commander Col. Mary-Kathryn Haddad.
Change of command events are traditionally brief, but significant, military ceremonies that involve the outgoing commander passing a flag to the incoming leader. The flag is meant to represent the people, achievements and mission for which the incoming commander is now accepting full responsibility.
“This is the best and most professional group in the Air Force,” said Watts. “I am so honored to come along side you as you serve our great nation. In just the last few days, I’m already in awe of the specialized and unique capabilities you bring to the nation, but I still have so much to learn about your mission, your Airmen, your Guardians, and your passion. I challenge you to teach me, mentor me and lead me. In return, I promise to lead you in the best way I know how.”
As a part of NASIC, GS is responsible for creating geospatial and signatures intelligence and innovating advanced capabilities to characterize objects, activities and events to deliver decision advantage for the Air Force and the nation.
Watts spoke at the ceremony of his commitment to ensuring GS continues to lead the way.
“I’m committed to accelerating the change to maintain our global competitive advantage, and just as importantly, to ensure every Soldier, Sailor, Airmen, Marine and Guardian can win when our nation calls upon them to do so,” said Watts.
Before formally handing command of GS to Watts, Haddad thanked her team, peers and leadership for all of their hard work and support during her tenure at NASIC.
“At my first commander’s call, I shared with you my leadership philosophy of pursuing purpose with passion, of being good people while doing great things, and above all, having courage, and being kind,” said Haddad. “Continue being awesome and remain unapologetic about what you contribute to the NASIC mission. Remember, it’s you who puts the source in all-source. Thank you for giving me the absolute time of my life.”
After receiving the flag from Haddad, Watts officially took command of GS.
“I have two simple orders as I take command,” Watts said. “Take care of your Airmen, and make your mission happen every single day with pride, professionalism and excellence.”
