The Camp Schwab USO opened its doors to the local community to share the holiday spirit at the 38th Camp Schwab/USO Christmas Children’s Day Dec. 7 while III MEF Band welcomed the attendees with a performance.
It is now considered a “traditional” event to people around Camp Schwab. More than 300 local residents attended this year’s event.
The USO Christmas Children’s Day began 38 years ago when Katsuko Epperson, former Center Manager of Camp Schwab’s USO, came up with an idea about raising spirits of service members during the holiday season by having a Christmas party and shared the idea with the director of USO. The two then decided to invite the children living in the neighboring community of Camp Schwab, Henoko District in Nago city.
“The kids who were six graders on the first year of this event, they are already 50,” said Fumio Iha, Camp Schwab Community Relations Specialist. “A lot of parents here with their children were the kids who used to come here to have fun and receive presents themselves when they were little.”
At first, Epperson's intention was to give the service members stationed at Camp Schwab far away from their home a chance to feel the happiness and the warmth of the holiday season by interacting with local children as if they were brothers and sisters.
At the same time, she hoped children would experience an American Christmas atmosphere. Ever since then, the USO hosted the event with volunteers by providing gifts, food, and various kinds of activities for 38 consecutive years.
According to Iha, after Epperson retired about 20 years ago, the event was renamed to Camp Schwab/USO Christmas Children’s Day under the full support of Camp Operations and troops stationed at Camp Schwab.
It was expanded to Kube-three-district, including Kushi and Toyohara in 2013. More than 350 children and their parents came for the event last year.
This year, despite the rain, 81 vehicles entered the gate. About 240 presents were given out to the children from 0-12 years of age.
“I used to come here when I was a kid. I don’t even remember when my first time was, but I brought my kids every year after I grew up and now even my grandchild,” said Manabu Kokuba, 45, of Henoko district. All three generations, Kokuba, his youngest daughter, his one-year-old grandson and his mother who is the older daughter of Kokuba, enjoyed the event.
“When I was a kid, they partnered up one on one, and Marines took us to places for activities. It was fun. To me, the base is always there and it’s natural to see it there. Marines are always friendly and I only have good memories,” Kokuba continued.
The event opened with the remarks from Col Jason S. D. Perry, camp commander of Camp Schwab and commanding officer of 4th Marine Regiment. "Christmas in America is a very important event. It is to share love and joy with family and friends, and I am very happy to be able to get along well with you and celebrate Christmas with joy and happiness,” Col Perry stated in Japanese without a translator.
The children spread throughout the USO facility, some went to play table tennis or pool against U.S. volunteers. Others went to have their faces painted, or eat turkey and traditional holiday dishes. Many children also enjoyed creating their own decorative cookies with frosting and icing. Outside the facility, residents from Henoko district provided 300
bowls of soba noodles to attendees.
Shortly after the Christmas cake was cooperatively cut by Col Perry, USO Center Manager Gary S. John, and Head leader of Henoko Youth Guidance Group, Katsuomi Shimabukuro and it was served to holiday guests and volunteers, the moment every child was waiting for happened.
With the sound of a fire engine, came Santa Claus. Everyone gathered and took pictures, then, it was time for presents.
“Presents used to be a bag full of candies," recalled Epperson. "We prepared about 300 presents this year all from USO volunteers and people's goodwill," said John.
This year's Children's Day came to an end with the children of Henoko district singing a Christmas song to show their appreciation. About 60 volunteers and staff, who lined up in front of the children, started taking pictures and videos with big smiles on their faces while the children were singing.
“I think this event is an awesome event to get the single Marines and sailors out of their barracks and engaging with the local community and give the local Henoko community the opportunity to engage with their American neighbors through fun games and activities, attempting to speak English, accepting gifts by experiencing it the traditional American way,” John continued, “I hope they remember this event for the rest of their lives and hopefully one day return as an adult to say that they were here as a child.”

USOクリスマスこどもの日は38年前に始まった。当時アメリカの非営利団体であるUSO（米国慰問団）のセンターマネジャーだった勝子エパーソンさんは、ホリデーシーズン中に隊員達の士気を高めるためにクリスマスパーティーを開くということを思いつきUSOディレクターに話した。その後、二人はキャンプ・シュワブの近隣地区である名護市の辺野古区に住んでいた子供たちを招待することを決めた。
「このイベントの最初の年に12歳だった子供達は、今はもう50歳だよ」キャンプ・シュワブ渉外官である伊波文雄氏は言った。「今いる多くの子供連れの親は、かつて自分たちが子供の頃ここに来て遊んで、プレゼントをもらってた子ども達なんだよ」と伊波氏。
エパーソンさんの当初の考えは、キャンプ・シュワブに駐屯する隊員達に、地元の子どもたちと兄弟姉妹のように交流することで、休日気分の幸せと温かさを感じてもらい、そして、子供たちにはアメリカのクリスマスを体験する機会を持ってもらうことだった。局長はそれに賛同し、以来、USOは38年間、ボランティアの隊員達と共にプレゼントや食べ物、様々な遊びを提供することでイベントを主催し続けてきた。
約20年前にエパーソンさんが退職後、キャンプ・シュワブ業務部や駐屯する部隊等の全面協力のもと、このイベントはキャンプ・シュワブ/USOクリスマスこどもの日と改名された。
伊波氏によると、2013年には久志区と豊原区を含めた「久辺３区」に拡大され、昨年は350人以上の子どもたちとその保護者が訪れた。
今年はあいにくの雨にも関わらず、81台の車両がゲートをくぐり、 0歳児から12歳までの児童園児に約240個のプレゼントが配られた。
「私は子供の頃、ここに来ていた。初めての年がいくつだったかは覚えてないけれど、大人になってから毎年子供たちを連れてきて、今日は孫も連れて来た」と辺野古区の国場学氏(45)は言った。今年がこのイベント最後の年となる12歳の末娘、今年がイベントデビュー年になる1歳の孫、国場氏の娘であるその母親と3世代一緒にイベントを楽しんだ。
「私が子供の頃は、海兵隊員らは1対1で子供について、色々な遊びの場所に連れて行ってくれた。楽しかったよ。私にとって、基地はいつもにそこにあり、海兵隊員はいつもフレンドリーだったよ」と国場氏は続けた。
イベントは、キャンプ・シュワブ司令官であり第4海兵連隊ジェイソン・Ｓ・Ｄ・ペリー大佐の開会の言葉で始まった。「アメリカのクリスマスは非常に重要なイベントです。家族や友人と愛と喜びを分かち合う時であり、皆さんと仲良く、喜びと幸福でクリスマスを祝うことができてとても幸せです」と、ペリー大佐は流暢な日本語で述べた。
子どもたちはUSO施設内で、米国人ボランティアと卓球やビリヤードをしたり、フェイスペイントをしてもらったり、アメリカの祝日の伝統的な七面鳥料理を食べたり、自分独自のクッキーをデコレーションしたりした。施設の中庭では、辺野古区から提供された300杯の「沖縄そば」に日米の参加者は舌鼓を打った。
辺野古区青少年指導員長である島袋勝臣氏によってクリスマスケーキがカットされ、参加者全員に振舞われた直後、すべての子供が待ちわびた瞬間が来た。
消防車のサイレンの音と共に、サンタクロースが登場した。 みんなが集まってサンタクロースの写真を撮った後、プレゼントの時間となった。
エパーソンさんは「昔はプレゼントは袋いっぱいのキャンディーだったわ」と振り返る。ジョン氏は「今年はUSOボランティアと人々の善意から約300個のプレゼントを用意しました」と言う。
今年も例年通り、辺野古地区の子どもたちがクリスマスソングを歌い、主催者や関係者に感謝の気持ちを伝えて閉会となった。 子どもたちの前に並ぶ約60人のボランティアやスタッフが、子どもたちが歌っている間、満面の笑みを浮かべて写真やビデオを撮っていた。
「このイベントは独身隊員を寮から出し、地域社会と関わる素晴らしいイベントだと思います。また、地元の辺野古地域へは楽しいゲームやアクティビティ、また英語を話そうとしたり、伝統的なアメリカ式でプレゼントを受けとったりという方法でアメリカの隣人に関わる機会も与えてくれます」とジョン氏。「そして、彼らがこれから先もこのイベントを覚えていて、いつかある日、大人になって帰って来た時、自分もかつて子供の時にここに来たよ、と言ってくれれば嬉しい。」
