Rotarians see “both sides of shield” at Kinser Battle of Okinawa Historical Display / ロータリアン、キンザー沖縄戦歴史資料館で｢楯の両面｣を見る

Rotary club members from Rotary International District 2580 toured the Battle of Okinawa Historical Society display on Camp Kinser Feb. 14 to learn about U.S. military bases and to understand the purpose of U.S. military presence in Okinawa.

After attending the two-day regional conference in Okinawa, 24 Rotarians from Tokyo and three Okinawan members used the third day of the tour to visit the display on Camp Kinser, according to Atsushi Nerome, a member of the Okinawa Naha-East Rotary Club. Nerome requested Camp Kinser's community relations specialist Ichino Kuba the tour for the group.

"We wanted to help the members from Tokyo deepen their mutual understanding and improve the communication by looking at the Military bases in Okinawa not just from outside but also from the inside," said Junichi Inagaki, a member of the Naha-South Rotary Club and the Chairman of the regional conference.

The party met Kuba at the gate and then went to the display in the Camp Kinser Headquarters building. Due to the display only being open when there are visitors, the party waited until it was unlocked.

Serving as a bridge between the Marine Corps and local communities daily, Kuba herself often serves as a guide for the the display when people visit it.

Kuba pointed out the displayed artifacts and relics one by one and explained the historical background, flow, and the situation and environment at the time of the war based on the damage of the items.

Last time the regional conference was held in Okinawa seven years ago, there was a development of the area "Near Omoromachi Station" in Naha and many remains were excavated. Rotarians at the time decided to support the people who were helping to collect remains of the war dead.

This time their purpose of gathering was to support the recovery of Shuri Castle, according to Inagaki.

At the same time, however, Inagaki and Nerome added this visit to the display on Camp Kinser to their plan in order to help them better understand Okinawa.

Shinobu Suzuki, a wife of a Rotarian from Tokyo Ikebukuro Rotary Club, said, “This display was much more fulfilling and very informative. I am glad I came to this tour this time," while recalling the experience she had seven years ago when she actually saw the size of the area the U.S. military bases occupied with her own eyes from the bus and she was so astonished even though she had known about it through media.

"I thought that this place only displayed all about the wins of the United States military, but I was very impressed that they display equally and treat the Japanese, U.S. and Allied sides equally," Eiichi Saito of Chiba Ichikawa from Tokyo Joto Rotary Club expressed his thought.

In addition, Saito, a certified curator for a museum, remarked on the Kinser Battle of Okinawa Historical Display, “The equality that is the way the display should be.” He thanked the display to share with them the valuable things which are not easy to see.

　国際ロータリー第２５８０地区の会員が２月14日、キンザー沖縄戦歴史資料館に立ち寄った。目的は沖縄県内にある米軍基地について学び、何故ここに基地があるのかを理解するためだ。

　沖縄那覇東ロータリークラブ会員である根路銘敦さんによると、24名の東京のロータリークラブメンバーと３名の沖縄のメンバーは、沖縄で開催された２日間にわたる地区大会に参加後、希望者でキャンプ･キンザー内にある同資料館を訪れた。根路銘さんの推薦で、キャンプ･キンザー渉外官の久場一乃さんが案内役を引き受けた。

　「色々な組織のリーダーである東京からの会員に沖縄の基地を内側からも見てもらい、お互いの理解を深め、コミュニケーションを高めるお手伝いをしたかった」と那覇南ロータリークラブに所属し今地区大会会長の稲垣純一さんは言った。

　一行はゲートで久場渉外官と合流後、キャンプ･キンザー司令部のある建物内の歴史資料館へと足を運んだ。通常は訪問者がある時のみ開館であるため、鍵が開けられるのを待ちいよいよ入館。

　久場渉外官は米海兵隊と地元地域との交流の架け橋を務める傍ら、このように資料館を視察に来る訪問者には自らがガイドとなり案内する。

　久場渉外官は資料館に展示されている品々を１つ１つ紹介しながら、それらの歴史的背景、流れ、その時の状況や環境を遺品や遺物の破損状況を踏まえて説明していった。

　７年前に沖縄で地区大会が開催された際は、那覇市「おもろまち駅付近」の開発に伴い多くの遺骨が掘り起こされていた時だった。当時のロータリアンは遺骨収集の活動の支援を買って出た。今回は焼失した首里城の再建支援が主であった、と稲垣さんは言う。

　しかし、稲垣さんは、根路銘さんと共に「沖縄をより良く知ってもらうため」に、この資料館を視察する事も予定に組み込んだ。

　東京池袋ロータリークラブ会員鈴木孝雄夫人の忍さんは、７年前の来県時、ニュースでしか触れることがなかった広大な米軍基地をバスの車窓越しに目の当たりにした。今回、夫婦で来県し、基地の内側を垣間見て「今回のこの資料館はとても充実していて参考になりました。今日このツアーに参加してよかったです」と感想を述べた。

　東京城東ロータリークラブの斎藤栄一さんは、「米軍が勝ったことだけを展示していると思って来たが日本側、米軍側、連合国側を平等に扱っていることに関して非常に感激しました」と語った。

　また、博物館の学芸員の資格を有する斎藤さんはキンザー沖縄戦歴史資料館について「博物館の在り方を、（この資料館を見て）平等でなければならないと感じました」と言い、なかなか見れるものではない貴重な展示を見学できたことに感謝した。
