SAN DIEGO – United Through Reading's first mobile story station arrived at Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command (NMRTC) San Diego June 23.
United Through Reading is a non-profit organization that allows service members to record themselves reading a book at story stations and upload the recording to United Through Reading's online cloud. From there, family members can access the recordings via an online portal.
New books are donated directly from publishers or bought by United Through Reading using grants and other funds.
"After people record themselves reading, we give the books to them so they can take it home and read it to their child in person," said Penney Letrud-Samons, a United Through Reading volunteer. "We also only give out new books, because new books last longer than old ones."
United Through Reading's service is free and has over 200 story stations around the world.
"I love the idea that when I'm away from home, my daughter will have this small moment to hold on to," said Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Jessica Alvarez, a Sailor assigned to NMRTC San Diego. "In the military, we spend so much time away from our families, so it's great to have services like this to connect with our loved ones back home."
The United Through Reading Mobile Story Station will return to NMRTC San Diego Sept. 29th.
United Through Reading has connected families around the world for over 32 years, facilitating important moments of family bonding that transcend a technologically-driven world.
NMRTC San Diego’s mission is to prepare service members to deploy in support of operational forces, deliver high quality healthcare services and shape the future of military medicine through education, training and research. NMRTC San Diego employs more than 6,000 active duty military personnel, civilians and contractors in Southern California to provide patients with world-class care anytime, anywhere.
