Rock Island, Ill. – Joint Munitions Command hosted Christina Freese, deputy chief of staff for resource management at Army Materiel Command, to discuss the importance of JMC’s munitions capabilities, the fiscal year budget and modernization efforts on June 15.

As the senior resource management official for AMC, a four-star Army command and JMC’s higher headquarters, Freese manages AMC’s day-to-day resource operations and oversees an annual budget of more than $40 billion.

Freese’s visit helped synchronize the behind-the-scenes aspects of AMC’s and JMC’s operations including producing, shipping, storing, and demilitarizing all conventional munitions for the Department of Defense.

“Sound financial management makes the U.S. Army go ‘round,” John Campbell, JMC’s deputy chief of staff for resource management, said. “Ensuring our commands are on the same page helps us maximize readiness, efficiency and effectiveness with the resources at hand for our men and women in uniform.”

The U.S. Army prides itself on acting as a responsible steward of taxpayer dollars and uses in-person visits like these to ensure organizations maintain financial best practices in areas such as logistics, contracting and financial execution.

JoEtta Fisher, JMC’s executive director for ammunition and deputy to the commander, underscored the importance of comprehensive money management to providing quality munitions to warfighters across the world.

“Many people don’t realize all the work that takes place before troops actually receive their ammunition,” Fisher said. “Hundreds of hours of labor takes place before a single explosive round is loaded onto a truck, and much of that time is spent on financial planning and readiness. It’s essential to keeping warfighters ready, reliable and lethal.”

Freese also provided mentorship and career advice from her own experiences during a professional development forum for JMC employees.

“No matter what place you have in an organization you can be a leader,” Freese said to forum attendees. “You should be a leader. There are many examples of leaders in organizations that may not be the ones that are in charge. Develop your leadership skills no matter where you are professionally.”
