ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL, Ill – The U.S. Army Sustainment Command welcomed Maj. Gen. Chris Mohan as its new commanding general here June 15.

Gen. Ed Daly, commanding general of the U.S. Army Materiel Command – ASC’s higher headquarters – hosted the assumption of command ceremony under a warm and sunny summer sky with the mighty Mississippi River flowing in the background.

Daly passed the ASC flag from Matthew Sannito, a member of the Senior Executive Service, to Mohan. Sannito is the deputy to the commanding general, and served briefly as executive director of ASC following the retirement of the previous ASC commanding general, Maj. Gen. Daniel Mitchell, last month.

Though the ceremony was held outdoors, attendance was limited, social distancing was practiced, and the ceremony was streamed live via Facebook.

In his remarks, Daly praised the work of ASC’s 30,000 Soldiers and civilians stationed globally, saying that ASC’s mission is critical to sustaining America’s warfighters.

Daly said the assumption of command ceremony is a time-honored military tradition and “is a great opportunity to recognize the history and lineage of a great organization, and in this case Army Sustainment Command.”

He also thanked Sannito for filling in the interim, commending him for “your personal leadership and what you do each and every day for Army Sustainment Command.”

Daly also stressed the importance of continued strong leadership within ASC, saying that Mohan was the right leader at the right time. He “has the pedigree and the leadership skills to run this organization with distinction,” Daly said of Mohan.

“He’s a great leader, a great mentor, a great coach, and a fantastic trainer. He understands how the Army operates, and how it will fight and win in a multi-domain environment in the future. And for those reasons, Chris Mohan is going to take over today and take this organization to the next level.”

“Sir, thank you for the opportunity to command this outstanding organization. It’s an incredible opportunity. I do not take it lightly, and I will not fail,” Mohan said during his speech.

Mohan said ASC is made up of “first-class professionals who can rightly claim to be among the best in the world at what they do. I feel privileged, and a little bit humbled, to be here, to be called upon to lead this great organization. ASC…we…have a no-fail mission, and we will not fail, because you’ve never failed in the past.

“America’s Army cannot go to war without the support that we provide. It’s really that simple. We are on the front lines when units are called into combat, and we are present at all installations where our Soldiers train for combat,” Mohan said. “There is no substitute for what this great team provides to the warfighter.”

Mohan also praised the strong relationship between Rock Island Arsenal and the surrounding community, and said he and his family looks forward to living here and making new friends.

“The reputation of the Quad Cities as a place that really supports Rock Island Arsenal and supports our military is outstanding. The relationship between this community and the Arsenal is incredibly strong, and I hope to build on that relationship and make it even stronger,” Mohan said.

As commanding general of ASC, Mohan will lead an organization responsible for providing responsive logistical support worldwide, through a global network with a presence in more than 20 countries and 32 states. Mohan will also serve as senior mission commander of RIA.

Mohan will become ASC’s 11th commanding general since the command was established in October 2006.

Mohan comes to ASC from Kaiserslautern, Germany, where he served as commanding general of the 21st Theater Sustainment Command.

A native of Carthage, North Carolina, Mohan was commissioned as an officer in 1989 following his graduation from Appalachian State University in Boone, North Carolina. His assignments include overseas deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as assignments at Fort Bragg, North Carolina; Fort Lewis, Washington; Fort Hood, Texas; Tooele Army Depot, Utah; and Scott Air Force Base, Illinois.

Mohan has also served at Department of the Army Headquarters and at the headquarters of the U.S. Army Materiel Command, ASC’s higher headquarters.

Along with the bachelor’s degree he earned at Appalachian State, Mohan holds master’s degrees from both the U.S. Naval War College and U.S. Army War College.

Mohan is married and has three adult children.
