NAVAL SUPPORT ACTIVITY BAHRAIN (June 15, 2021) – Vice Adm. Brad Cooper, commander, U.S. Naval Forces Central Command, U.S. 5th Fleet and Combined Maritime Forces, visited aircraft carrier USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) June 11 during the ship’s sustainment and logistics port visit to Duqm, Oman.

Cooper met with the crew, toured the machine shop for a self-sufficiency demonstration, and received a brief from senior leaders aboard Dwight D. Eisenhower, flagship of the Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group.

“IKE Strike Group is firing on all cylinders. I could not be prouder of the work that Sailors throughout the entire Strike Group are doing,” said Cooper. “Visiting IKE offered me an opportunity to say 'thank you' in person to IKE Sailors who are keeping America safe, deterring aggression, supporting our efforts in Afghanistan and ensuring regional stability.”

The Eisenhower Carrier Strike Group is deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of operations in support of naval operations and providing airpower to protect U.S. and coalition forces as they conduct drawdown operations from Afghanistan.

Capt. Paul F. Campagna, commanding officer, USS Dwight D. Eisenhower (CVN 69) emphasized the importance of the mission and praised his crew’s efforts. “I am proud of the exceptional quality of work during a long period at sea by all the Sailors onboard IKE supporting the responsible, deliberate and safe drawdown of American forces in Afghanistan,” said Campagna.

All aspects of the June 11-14 port visit were planned and carried out in full compliance with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Department of Defense (DOD) and host nation COVID-19 mitigation measures.

The 5th Fleet area of operations encompasses about 2.5 million square miles of water area and includes the Arabian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, Red Sea and parts of the Indian Ocean. The expanse is comprised of 20 countries and includes three chokepoints, critical to the free flow of commerce.
