105th Airlift Wing Overcomes Challenges During Large-Scale Readiness Exercise

    NEWBURGH, NY, UNITED STATES

    06.13.2021

Story by Tech. Sgt. Patrick Espeut

    105th Airlift Wing

Just over 100 Airmen from the 105th Airlift Wing participated in a large-scale readiness exercise (LRE) held over the course of 3 days, at Stewart Air National Guard Base in Newburgh, NY. This LRE simulated 105th members being deployed to Gwangju South Korea.

The purpose of the exercise is to demonstrate not only the unit’s swift deployment capabilities but also the ability to survive and operate in a simulated chemical exposed environment while wearing mission oriented protective posture gear (MOPP). These types of exercises are designed to identify areas for improvement as well as to highlight strengths.

“There are times that we find blind spots and we’re looking to work through those to get to our end goal the fastest and safest possible way.” said 2nd Lt. Maria Vidacovich, 105th AW Installation Deployment officer

The first day consists of processing deployed airmen through the pre-deployment function (PDF) line. The PDF line ensures that personnel are properly equipped with valid identification, dog tags, records of emergency data and all other necessary deployment documentation.

During the next two days of the exercise, Airmen were tasked with completing basic job functions while dealing with simulated challenges. Some of the challenges the Airmen from the 105th faced while in MOPP gear consisted of ground attacks, missile attacks, unexploded ordinance, runway damage, and multiple casualties.

Tech. Sgt. Owen Monk, 105th Base Defense Squadron Team Leader, commented on the importance of conducting this type of training.
“Overall the biggest understanding is to make sure that we are not learning this stuff down range,” Monk said. “This is the time and opportunity we get to make our mistakes, to grow as a squad and definitely as a coalition force.”
