JOINT BASE SAN ANTONIO – FORT SAM HOUSTON, Texas -- On a hot, muggy day U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Ramiro Rangel, Jr., Army South Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion, and Spc. Justin Earnhart, 470th Military Intelligence Brigade, pull security in the shade before beginning the battle lanes during the Army Futures Command Best Warrior Competition in San Antonio, Texas, June 8, 2021.

Soldiers are competing in a series of nine events evaluating their physical ability, tactical performance and knowledge of Army regulations in order to move on to the Department of the Army Headquarters Best Warrior Competition at Fort Knox, Ky. in October of this year.

“Being a competitor in this Best Warrior Competition means that you have to compete against some of the best Soldiers within the Army Futures Command,” said Earnhart. “You will be tested mentally, physically and emotionally, and I am blessed to be able to compete beside these Soldiers.”

Yesterday the competitors took part in an evaluation of their warrior tasks and battle drills, and today they performed a land navigation assessment and weapons qualifications on the M4, the M17 and the M249.

There are seven Soldiers competing from Army North, Army South, Army Test and Evaluation Command and Army Futures Command.

“Competing against these great non-commissioned officers has shown me that I need to continue to improve my skills,” said Rangel. “It sets a precedent that I need to not just keep up with them but pass them.”

One non-commissioned officer and one junior enlisted Soldier will advance to the next stage of the competition.

After a grueling week of physical and mental tests in the Texas heat, winners will be announced tomorrow, Friday, June 11.
