188th Wing offers Senior NCO Course

    FORT SMITH, AR, UNITED STATES

    06.05.2021

    Story by Capt. Jennifer Gerhardt

    188th Wing

Seventeen enlisted personnel attended the first course.

“The most useful parts to me were the Continuous Improvement, Culture of Engagement and Conflict Management blocks,” said Master Sgt. David Pope, 188th Operations Group NCOIC for the commander’s support staff. “I think every SNCO can take something away from the course depending on their strength and weaknesses due to the wide variety of topics covered.”

The course is designed to improve the understanding of the SNCO roles, duties, and responsibilities, increase proficiency in key leadership skills and behaviors, and impart leadership tools and insight so that the next generation of Enlisted Leaders on our base are prepared when they are put in a position of higher authority.

“At its core, this course is for leadership development and applying it at the unit level,” said Chief Master Sgt. Marcus Booker, the 188th Operations Support Squadron and the SNCO course manager. “We want to bridge the gap between professional military education (PME) and focus it on local leadership training.”

In 2019, Chief Booker, CMSgt. Donnie Frederick, and CMSgt. Michael Francis went to Maxwell Air Force Base, Alabama to get an idea of what kind of leadership products were available and what in-residence courses were offered to senior enlisted people. The final course will include subjects on developing full-range leadership, team dynamics, conflict and resource management, creating a culture of engagement, and leading change.
