The Fort McCoy Commissary did its part to boost awareness of Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month by participating in multiple events throughout April.
Staff members created their own version of The Clothesline Project, which is a visual display of T-shirts bearing violence statistics and sentiments from survivors or family members of those who lost loved ones to assault or abuse. The Fort McCoy Commissary hung paper T-shirts along a display filled with sexual-assault and domestic violence resources, as well as a donation collection box for Brighter Tomorrows in Sparta, Wis.
Brighter Tomorrows serves survivors of domestic violence and sexual assault in Monroe County. All services are free, confidential, voluntary, and accessible. Some of the services available include information and referrals; legal, medical, and personal advocacy; safety planning; emotional support and support groups; and community education. A crisis line is available 24/7 at 888-886-2327.
Commissary patrons donated approximately 500 pounds of supplies to Brighter Tomorrows, such as hygiene items and cleaning supplies. Donations were collected throughout the month of April.
Commissary staff members also participated in Denim Day. Denim Day is the last Wednesday of April and is intended to help combat victim blaming and raise awareness about sexual assault. The campaign began after the Italian Supreme Court overturned a rape conviction because the justices thought that, since the victim was wearing tight jeans, she must have helped the rapist remove her jeans, thereby implying consent. The following day, women in the Italian Parliament wore jeans to work to show solidarity with the victim. The movement has since spread worldwide.
“Ms. Cindy Perry and her team truly supported SAAPM above and beyond expectations,” said Rebecca Wilkinson, sexual-assault response coordinator with Army Community Service.
