~2021 Chief, National Guard Bureau Postal Matches complete, Alabama National Guardsmen Champions
by Maj. Theresa L. Austin, National Guard Marksmanship Training Center
HAMPTON, North Carolina –National Guardsmen, from across the nation, competed in the 2021 Chief, National Guard Bureau (CNGB) Postal Matches—Phase III at Camp Butner Training Center, Hampton, North Carolina on May 17 through 21.
Alabama Army National Guardsmen, Spc. Jacob Watkins and Staff Sgt. Marshall Hodge took home the top titles this year from among 38 other Army and Air Guard competitors in attendance.
With a combined score of 2,768-40X, Watkins earned the Overall Aggregate Champion title, and with a 1,790-23X rifle aggregate score, he was, also, named Overall Rifle Champion. Hodge aggregated a score of 1,181-29X in pistol earning the Overall Pistol Champion title.
The CNGB Postal Matches are designed specifically to test shooters physically, mentally, tactically and strategically. They must be proficient in their marksmanship knowledge, skills and abilities to place high in the matches.
Phase III of the CNGB Postal Matches is a multiday individual live-fire competition conducted shoulder-to-shoulder, and is hosted by the National Guard Marksmanship Training Center (NGMTC). This year it was held at Camp Butner, North Carolina, and the NGMTC was grateful for the Camp Butner support staff, who were able to accommodate the event considering COVID-19 restrictions, which varied by military installation across the nation.
During Phase III, Guardsmen competed in fourteen separate match events that were aggregated to determine who would earn the overall individual aggregate champion title. They not only competed but received additional training from All Guard team members and some of the NGMTC small arms weapons instructors before the matches began.
Before arriving at Phase III, the individuals completed Phase I and II. After being racked and stacked against their peers during phase II, they received invitations to compete at Phase III.
Phase I- Postal Phase, is conducted at the unit level and then the results are mailed to the NGMTC. Phase II- Regional Paper Match Phase is a paper aggregate match conducted by NGMTC personnel once the Phase I results have been received, and determines who is invited to compete in Phase III- Shoulder-to-Shoulder Phase.
The CNGB Postal Matches are conducted in phases to encourage maximum participation across the entire National Guard. Competitors, who earn a spot to participate at Phase III, have the opportunity to learn marksmanship skills and weapon systems in a battle-focused environment, according to the official match program. They can then use these skills to share when they return to their home units to help improve their unit operational effectiveness as well as their own.
