    25th Infantry Division

SCHOFIELD BARRACKS, Hawaii.-- "Staff Sgt. Jacob Preisler, reporting to the president of the board," said Staff. Sgt. Jacob Preisler, Troop B, 3rd Battalion, 4th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division.
At the same time, he salutes Command Sgt. Maj. William D. Pouliot, senior enlisted leader, 25th Inf. Div. and U.S. Army Hawaii.
25th Inf. Div. Soldiers and noncommissioned officers (NCO) competed in the Warrior of the Year Competition on Schofield Barracks, Hawaii, May 11-14, 2021.
Seven Soldiers and seven NCOs completed a series of tests that measured each competitor's knowledge and skills over three days.
On day one, competitors completed a knowledgeable board that contained Sergeant Majors from each brigade.
"There are many concepts, AR's, chapters, and FM's; it is a lot to prepare for there is always more to know, especially for the board," said Pfc. Bryce Kossack, 1st Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 25th Inf. Div.
After completing the board, the competitors in-processed at Lightning Academy and had to write a 500-1000 word paper about, "If you were a higher ranking NCO and could change one thing about the Army, what would you change?"
The following morning, competitors performed an Army Combat Fitness Test, which tested each Soldier's physical fitness ability.
Once complete, competitors moved onto the following event: land navigation. Competitors were tasked with finding six points on the jungle land navigation course in under four hours.
Enduring the rain and treacherous jungle terrain, competitors filed back in after finding as many points as they could in the four-hour time period.
Competitors went straight into testing their knowledge on weapon systems, medical lanes, and camouflage techniques during the skill level 10 lanes.
Performing the skill level 10 tasks was the hardest event, just because he had to do it correctly, step by step, said Preisler.
Having little rest, competitors proceeded to the night land navigation course, with the time limit now only three hours to complete.
The following morning, competitors stepped off for a 12-mile ruck march at 4:30 a.m. from Lightning Academy to the Schofield Barracks shooting ranges.
"Going through the ruck march was the most difficult part just because of the physical pain," said Kossack. "But my mindset was never to quit; I was going to finish everything I had started."
Only four competitors completed the ruck march in the allotted three-hour time period.
After competitors completed a stress shoot on the electronic shooting range, they performed an M4-A1 weapons qualification.
The mystery event was to complete a z-line pulley system in 10-minutes with only a quick demonstration.
"Don't accept where you are and continue to push," said Kossack, who won the 25th Inf. Div. Soldier of the Year Competition.
“I’m still in amazement and shock that I won; it’s a really big deal,” said Preisler, who won the 25th Inf. Div. NCO of the Year Competition.
Both Soldiers were awarded an Army Commendation Medal by the commanding general and the command sergeant major.
Preisler and Kossack will now compete and represent the 25th Inf. Div. at the United States Army Pacific Best Warrior Competition.
