FORT CARSON, Colo. - Sgt. 1st Class Jessica Llavet, an operations sergeant and lead sensor manager cell evaluator for 1st Space Brigade at Fort Carson, Colorado, recently won the Colorado Springs Chamber & Economic Development Corporation’s (EDC) 2021 Outstanding Enlisted Military Representative in the senior enlisted (E-7/E-8) category. The virtual award ceremony was held via videoconference.
“I’d like to thank God,” said a teary-eyed Llavet in a remotely-televised video ceremony upon receiving the award. “With everything I do, I wouldn’t be here without his favor and grace. I’d also like to thank my husband, son and daughter. We volunteer as a family, so I couldn’t do this without them and their support. I’d also like to thank 1st Space for the recognition.”
Llavet was selected for her exceptional leadership abilities in the development and coordination of the brigade’s first-ever virtual certification system of downtrace units in remote locations during COVID-restricted conditions.
In addition to her accomplishments as the brigade’s lead evaluator, she serves as the 1st Space Brigade’s Headquarters and Headquarters Company’s Space Brigade Soldier and Family Readiness Group (SFRG) Command Family Readiness (CFR) representative where she planned and organized multiple unit level events to include a Hispanic heritage celebration, a Halloween trick-or-treat event, and published a Soldier family newsletter regarding upcoming events in the local community.
“We nominated Sgt. 1st Class Llavet because of all the volunteer work she does,” said Sgt. Maj. Tommy Flores of 1st Space Brigade. “She’s been doing great work for us in the short amount of time she’s been here and has been volunteering in the community for a while now. She is a leader that doesn’t brag about what she does, and it’s a lot. She finds ways to make things happen. Instead of hitting a roadblock and stopping, she finds ways to power though to get things accomplished.”
Nominated award recipients are selected based on their professional accomplishments and community service. The award is open to all branches of the military from the five military installations within the greater Colorado Springs metro area and falls into three categories: E1-E4; E5-E-6; and E7-E8.
Reggie Ash, the Colorado Springs Chamber and EDC’s chief defense development officer and a retired Air Force colonel, said it’s a tremendous honor to win the Armed Forces Award.
“Getting an award within your unit, or on your base or post, and within your service branch is always a great thing,” Ash said. “But when you compete against other branches of the military all across the Colorado Springs region, you have really done something outstanding.”
