Arctic Care Kodiak Island 2021 is an Innovative Readiness Training mission sponsored by the Office of the Secretary of Defense for Reserve Affairs, and this year’s mission is an active-duty Air Force-led event coordinated with the KANA and civil authorities to provide medical, dental, optometry, and veterinary care across communities on the island of Kodiak, Alaska.

While many dental providers were familiar with the software used for appointments, the training addressed the particular version used by KANA and templates created by the staff to streamline their workflow.

“We understand our visiting dental providers might be used to using a different version of [our electronic records system], so this orientation helps get everyone on the same page so we can efficiently move between patients,” said Dr. Pablo Gonzalez, KANA’s dental director. “The electronic records allow our visiting providers to chart and take their notes, and it will all be maintained in our system to help serve our community.”

Arctic Care 2021 dental providers also sat down with Heather Parker, a dental hygienist and case manager with KANA, to get some guidance on working with local patients before touring the facility to get familiar with where they would be working on completing dental procedures.

“Our community is really happy to have the Arctic Care team out, and our KANA team is looking forward to working together to help get our patients the care they need,” Parker said.

After the training wrapped up, Gonzalez and Parker took the Arctic Care 2021 dental providers around the facility to show them what is available to patients locally. They explained the types of dental procedures and services they can support, along with what would require a patient to be referred to outside providers for follow-up or advanced dental care.

“Programs like Innovative Readiness Training allow us to strengthen community partnerships by leveraging military contributions and community resources to multiply value and cost savings for participants,” said U.S. Navy Reserve Lt. Cmdr. Andrew Chen, a dentist, assigned to the 4th Dental Battalion at the Navy Operational Support Center Sacramento, California, and the dental team officer in charge of Arctic Care 2021. “This is a great opportunity for our uniformed members from the military services and U.S. Public Health Service to get collaborative, hands-on, real-world training to improve readiness in complex contingency environments.”
