Fort McCoy’s rail capabilities remain strong, as highlighted by a recent rail-loading exercise.
Soldiers with the 107th Support Maintenance Company (SMC), a Wisconsin National Guard unit based in Sparta, used Fort McCoy’s rail system in late April and early May to load equipment and prepare for an upcoming deployment. The unit will deploy to Eastern Europe in support of Operation Atlantic Resolve and a multinational joint exercise – Defender – Europe 202, according to the Wisconsin National Guard.
Fort McCoy’s strategic capabilities include 7.5 miles of track, one 6-acre staging yard, two container yards with 600 TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) capacity, and nine loading ramps for its rail customers In the past five years, Fort McCoy railways have been upgraded with new rail ties, tracks, and crossings throughout post.
“Fort McCoy maintains a critical capability of rail loading to support our ability for mobilization of units and equipment,” said Garrison Commander Col. Michael Poss after touring the facility May 3. “The rail team does a phenomenal job with instruction, oversight and transportation.”
Poss also visited with Soldiers from the 107th during his May 3 visit, wishing them well during their deployment and asking about their experiences at Fort McCoy.
The 107th SMC shared its appreciation of Fort McCoy’s support and customer service, especially the service provided by the Logistic Readiness Center’s rail team.
“LRC and Fort McCoy have been really great during this mission,” said Master Sgt. Barry Grimsled with the 107th SMC. “The attitude of Tony and Denny has been, ‘What can we do to help the Soldiers?’ We really appreciate all the work they’ve done.”
The Fort McCoy Logistics Readiness Center (LRC) provides quality and timely logistical services by fostering a customer-service and safety-first culture that ensures world-class support to its customers. On order, the LRC conducts mobilization support operations.
The LRC is responsible for the Central Issue Facility, Retail Supply Operations, Asset Management, Food Services, Materiel Support Maintenance, Transportation, and Ammunition Supply Services.
