    10th Special Forces Group (Airborne)

FORT CARSON, Colo. – Fort Carson might be the Army’s Mountain Post, but for one cold day in April it was the site of maritime training with the best aviation and dive assets our military has to offer. Green Berets with a 10th Special Forces Group (Airborne) paid a visit to Fort Carson’s Townsend Reservoir on April 20th, 2021 to conduct maritime operations with 3rd Battalion 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (SOAR) “Nightstalkers”.
“The intent of the training was to familiarize detachment members with fast rope insertion and extraction, helocasting, water exfiltration techniques, as well as interoperability between us and SOAR,” said the detachment commander. “It is critical that 10th Group and the 3/160th understand each other’s operating procedures and foster a relationship for future operations and training scenarios.”
10th Group Green Berets and SOAR Operators share work together to accomplish maritime insertion and extraction. Combat dive teams can only be as effective as the pilots that insert them into an area of operation. The knowledge and skill of SOAR’s aviation soldiers enhances 10th Group’s SFOD-A’s capabilities.
The training allowed the detachment and aircrew to solidify standard operation procedures (SOPs) and enhance techniques that can be used in future operations and training scenarios. It also reinforced the detachment’s cold weather dive techniques. Helocasting into such extreme conditions is rare for any Special Operations dive team, so embracing the chance furthers their experience and expertise.
Mission success often depends on the ability of separate units to come together and work toward a common goal. The SFOD-A has independent expertise that makes them a premiere combat dive team within U.S. Special Operations, but the ability to conduct interoperable missions is essential to higher echelons of capability and achievement.
