LAS VEGAS – Delana Cardenas officially retired on May 3, 2021 as the Nevada National Guard’s Child and Youth Program lead coordinator.

“Delana has put her heart and soul into taking care of our families,” Command Sgt. Maj. Michael Spaulding said. “I can’t thank her enough for everything she has done for us over the years.”

Cardenas has spent over nine years serving our southern Nevada military families. She helped build the Soldier family readiness teams, and assisted the children and youth to cope with the many challenges of service member deployments. She has also championed the cause with assisting their growth and development into strong and resilient adults.

Cardenas brought fun and laughter during very difficult times and worked hard to bring our military families together. From programs like Spring Fling in April, that recognizes military children, all the way to Santa’s Workshop, her dedication to our military families will always be remembered.

“It has really been a privilege to serve the Nevada Guard,” Cardenas said. “The families and children inspired me everyday and I will miss you all tremendously.”

A small retirement ceremony was held at the North Las Vegas Readiness Center on Apr. 29 to say farewell, and to wish Cardenas the very best with all her future endeavors.

In a surprise twist, the Employer Support for the Guard and Reserve (ESGR) presented the Seven Seals Award to Cardenas for meritorious leadership and initiative in support of the men and women who serve in the National Guard and Reserve.

ESGR representatives Ret. Col. James Walker and Rex Miller also presented awards to the USO Nevada McCarran International Airport, American Legion Auxiliary LD Lockhart Unit 14, Unit 14 Juniors, and 27 volunteers with the Nevada Child and Youth Program. All were given both Seven Seals Awards and Certificates of Appreciation for their support over the many years.

“My life has been enriched because of you,” Cardenas said. “I’ve had kids that were a part of our youth council and are now serving in the Army. What a privilege it has been to see them grow up and doing great things for our country. It has been an absolute honor to serve. Thank you.”
